All in the Timing @ Primary Stages?

I confess, I cannot for the life of me understand the critics' high regard for David Ives. Yes, he can play with language, but his plays are deadly.

I disliked All in the Timing when it was first presented, and this time I found it even more trying.

There are six playlets. The first five have about 30 seconds worth of humor each. The sixth has none. That makes for 2 1/2 minutes of humor in a one hour forty-five minute evening.

Bad timing!

The cast was good.

whatever,

There were some comments on the other board. They seemed mostly positive but suggest you check for yourself.

Whatever,

More comments on other board. Not a lot of details, but mostly praise.

PS - I'm not stalking you, I'm just looking for info too and remembered this thread.

mar6411: at my age, I'll take attention wherever I can get it,

Thanks for the info ... my husband is a CPA, so at this time of year I have to make my entertainment choices VERY carefully - only a few evenings' diversions between now and April 16th!

I just saw this yesterday with my daughter. We are big fans of Carson Elrod and went only to see his performance. I am not familiar with David Ives' work and was not expecting much. We ended up really enjoying it - Carson and the rest of the cast were excellent and most of the playlets very well done. A couple of them were pretty bizarre and we found ourselves laughing due to their absolute absurdity but overall found it very entertaining. I noticed many of the performances have been selling out so I guess it's doing pretty well.
mar6411 - what other board are you referencing? I'm interested to read what others thought.

After Eight, I agree with you on Ives but I do not understand why you would go back and see this again when you disliked the original production and you clearly dislike Ives. Was there a particular actor you wanted to see, or did you just want to catch a show and there was nothing else on? Not bashing you. Just wondering why. I hated Title of Show, for example, and no force on earth would ever drag me back to any revival, anywhere, ever. What gives?

^

I like Carson Elrod, and I'm open (sometimes) to giving second chances (often against my better judgment).

I decided to take the plunge this time.

Oh, and PS. Nothing, absolutely nothing, could drag me to see Title of Show again.

Just wanted to report back that I saw this show yesterday, and I absolutely loved it! It's like Monty Python at its best with an extra dose of absurdism thrown in. I love what Ives is saying about relationships, language and time. My friend and I found five of the six plays consistently hilarious. I agree with After Eight that the last one is not funny at all, and I'm sure its deeper meaning sailed over my head. My favorite is Words, Words, Words (the one with Kafka, Swift and Milton). I have such admiration for all the actors involved in this. They are wonderfully skilled and so versatile! Mrs. Bumbrake's assessment, above, is spot-on. If there's any way you can get yourself over to 59E59, do it! I think it's playing for another month or so.

I saw this last night and I have to say it's an absolutely wonderfully cast and directed production. It's a finely-tuned, well-oiled machine, and it's very well-staged. That said, this is just not my kind of show. I never, ever, ever thought I'd say this, but I have to sorta agree with After Eight. I just didn't find it that funny. I chortled a few times, but this type of humor does absolutely nothing for me. If you're a fan of this type of disjointed, quirky, absurdist humor, go see it. You'll love it. I always try to give shows a chance, and I had a feeling this wouldn't be up my alley. It wasn't. Oh, well. But, like I said, the cast is fantastic (particularly Carson Elrod), and John Rando's sharp eye for comedic flair is very apparent.
