I was just reading the article about this possible show. I love the film, and thought Christian Bale was born to play Patrick Bateman. I can't imagine anyone else in the role.
Sheik better have workshopped the hell out of this thing. I feel like he announces a new project every few months that eventually has one small regional production that awes exactly no one and then vanishes.
"I've never seen Andy Karl play dark and real. I'm not saying he's unable to and it would be interesting to see if he could."
Dark and real? What American Psycho are you referring to exactly? Maybe I'm nit-picking, but as a huge Ellis fan and repeat-reader of the book and repeat-viewer of the movie, American Psycho exists almost entirely in an incredibly heightened reality. Dark, yes, but realistic is hardly what's called for in the material. Almost all of Ellis' work is characterized by a dry, dark humor that can easily go right over the head of a casual viewer, but the brilliance of American Psycho lies in how disturbingly close to the darkness and griminess of our basest impulses the heightened reality Ellis creates can get.
I didn't mean real as in stone-cold reality. I meant it more as I've never seen Andy Karl (and I'm a big fan of his) not be "on" and go for the laugh. He's always in a heightened state, but his particular style doesn't particularly fit with the piece's heightened style. I'm in no way saying he can't do it or be amazing, in fact, I'd love for him to get the opportunity. I just meant it as he's never played this particular style and color before.
Nasty_khakis, no worries. I wasn't making a comment on Andy Karl's ability to do the role, just clarifying what you meant by the "reality" of the piece. :) I agree that I'd love to see him step outside his usual fare, I think he'd handle the material quite well.
