West End questions

Will be in London in June and just bought tickets to A Chorus Line and Matilda. Two questions. First, what is theatre attire like in London? New York I think is a bit casual. Is it the same in London? Or more dressy? Also, are the window cards the same size and made out of card board? Or are they paper, which would allow them to be rolled? Thanks for your help!!

I would say London is also a bit casual. More dressy for evening performances than mats though.

I can't speak for A Chorus Line, but Matilda did not have a windowcard when I was there in December. However, they were selling posters printed on paper.

I saw a couple of shows on the West End last May and I would say most people were dressed in business casual attire.

In my experience, window cards, when they are on sale, are a little bit smaller than Broadway's.

I agree with PastorErnst on attire, but it really runs the gamut, like here. I always say the occasion is what you make of it, so you'll always see a mix.

At Cabaret at the Savoy, one man next to me got a compliment on how dapper he was dressed; him and his partner were quite formal but not black tie; other rows everyone dressed more business casual, but one lady was definitely over casual and looked like she pulled her outfit out of the hamper. Overall, though, I noticed that in people liked to dress nicer for the theater than what you normally see on Broadway. Don't be afraid to look your finest when you see a show! But it's not a prereq.

Thanks for the responses! So do we think that window cards from London can be rolled with out destroying them? Assuming they are even available!

Why not switch over to the West End board and ask some of the lads over there?

@Leadingplayer That is Matthew James Thomas. He played the title role in A.R.T.'s production of Pippin... and will (presumably) do so again on Broadway.
