I love the talent involved, but this show will be a hard sell. If Priscilla had trouble with marketing then the KB team will have double the task. How and to who do you sell this show?
Is this board designed for theater lovers or miserable creatures who try to doom shows before they even start previews? I think Kinky Boots will be a great show and will probably be one of the best new musicals of the Spring season. I'm sure it will do well enough and have a decent run. Please dont put the kiss of death on it before the curtain even rises and keep the negative energy to yourself.
I speak for myself in saying Im not putting a kiss of death on any show, Im just being honest. I am curious how they will market this story to the public.
I have to admit I was wondering about the marketing as well. I mean, to me this is going to be going after the same demo as Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. I don't mean to compare two drag queen shows just because of subject matter, but they have in common well known pop songs/a well known pop legend taking over the music and the advertising is, to me, similar in tone. There are no real "stars" in either cast, etc. Obviously it did not work for Priscilla, but perhaps Kinky Boots is a more well-constructed show and the quality of the show will advertise itself.
Bettyyboy, so far my mom and several friends have possessed interest in this show. These people I'm referring to fall into several different demographics. Also, don't underestimate Cyndi Lauper, who is a well loved and respected icon who composed the score. The story is good fun. If Kiss Of the Spider Wonan enjoyed a decent run in the early 90' s I'm sure this will do fine in 2013.
I am surprised this show didn't take the St James, considering it is still empty, if they stuck up a half decent marquee, with that red Kinky Boots, in a glitzy sequin effect, I am sure they make a lot more money on tourists passing. I guess the producers were attracted to the cheaper rent of the Al Hirschfeld, which is somewhereoff the beaten track.
i do enjoy the logo for Kinky Boots, I do wish that on the marquee it had a bit more sparkle. The sparkle of the logo is just flat and not very attractive. I wish they had perhaps given the whole marquee an outline in red glitter and put actual glitter on at least the K to make it pop a little more.
I think part of the problem they will have in marketing it is in what peope are perceiving Kinky Boots means. I saw the show in Chicago so I get it, but I had been sightly nervous about what exactly I was about to see before I did the first time. The show is really fun and it is actually a sweet story about being true to who you are as a person. I am looking forward to seeing what work has been done to it for the Broadway run!
Priscilla ran longer than expected so this might have a decent shot. If they market the show well it can sell. It also really depends on the reviews. If the show gets positive notices, it could help sell the show.
