Am I the only user excited about this? I absolutely LOVE the Original London Cast recording, and although I know it would be the Broadway production, I would see this any day. Thoughts?
Totally think this could rock if they fix all the problems. It'll def. need to be a spectacle, but still I think it could work. And an intimate Moby Dick sounds kind of awesome.
Yes you and RippedMan, Phan#24601. Really do we need another of these sung thru histrionic spectacles that are rooted in the 1980's. Please Cameron walk away...just walk away.
I wasn't aware there were that many sung thru histrionic musicals?
Anyway Martin Guerre is a beautiful story and deserves to be on stage.
Just in case anyone didn't know you had the original Martin Guerre musical which opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in June 1996, the production opened to mixed reviews, the production was spectacular. However major changes were made and Martin Guerre closed for major changes and reopened and went on to win best musical revival.
The production was overhauled again for a UK Tour, the writers Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg were invited to do rewrites, extensive revisions to the Liberetto and songs renamed and re-positioned. The physical production was trimmed considerable.
^The original London cast recording is the best one. Just get "Live With Somebody You Love" from the other recording on itunes or something if it's there.
The original London cast recording also more closely matches the latest revision of the libretto. They reverted back to a lot of the original material for the revised Watermill Theatre production in 2007. Hopefully, that will be the version that gets revived.
this is a beautiful musical and i hope it comes back to America but in its original form
as i mention whenever this thread pops up... i enjoyed the American version but still love the original... my problem with the musical is the book... I believe that Act 2 is a wonderful act... the story is tightened as it focuses really on the trial of Martin Guerre and then the aftermath...
Act 1 has no tight focus... although in the revised version they did clarify the relationship between Arnaud and Betrande and his identity from the beginning... the religious aspect is important for the story yet it wasn't very focused... and then when Act 1 ends it kind of ends anti-climactically... there is an incredible piece of theater in the show somewhere it just needs work
Thank's to the OP and this post, now I have the Forbidden Broadway song on a loop in my head.
I only saw the tour at the Ahmanson. (and since it played LA, when Forbidden Broadway played LA the next year, I believe we got the Martin Guerre number that never was in the show in NYC)
