Hmmm, not one mention of Mr. Crowe, but overall very nice review.

I'm seeing it...soon. And when I do, I hope I will need a Kleenex or two, and for the 'right,' reasons, hehe.

That was a great review, Miss Saigon. =)

Great review! Lea Salonga is so classy. Professional film critics could learn a thing or two from her.

Fantastic review!

Although she did not mention certain things, a lot becomes clear from reading between the lines :)

I like that, she is very respectful.

Professionals should learn from her? How so? By not mentioning the negatives ever? She's a still-working actress that's trying to maintain a working relationship with people like Cameron Mackintosh who've been very good and loyal to her throughout her career. She's being very professional, smart, and lovely about her review, but she's hardly objective, which is a critic's primary job. I hope this has gotten her a small part in the Miss Saigon film if that happens. lol

Who cares! LOL. I'm just glad her rationale for liking it was sound (NOT I liked it because "It's Le Miz!"). XD And even more, her honesty regarding her love of it and direct experience having formed an attachment to the original, that may be very subjective to others, but it's what she has to work with.

Sometimes I wish I could just say the same thing because going ape**** over details kinda sucks, but the trade off from what I get out of them is worth it. But still sucks...a little.

Now, if only I can get myself to see a film I've been waiting for eagerly since 1992. I promise I'm not a weirdo, LOL.

Exactly, nasty_khakis. I'll take her "critique" with a grain of salt. She's very close to the show and even admits she has "friends and colleagues participating in the movie," so her review is rather subjective. But if you read between the lines you can see that she prefers the stage show.

P.S. At least she spells is Les Miz and not Les Mis.

I was referring to the awful review of the film from Entertainment Weekly. I've mentioned it here before, but it was anything but a professional review-lots of snark, with no real constructive criticism or praise of any sort. At least here, Lea Salonga points out what she did like and why.

Anyhow, I see your points.

She does not only say positive things.

If you read carefully you can see she did not like Crowe at all and she didn't like Jackman's Bring him home very much.

And she had doubts about the casting.

She is not kissing ass at all.

You're just seeing things you want to see. Just because she doesn't mention someone doesn't mean she didn't like that person at all. Just because she liked another version of the song better, doesn't mean she didn't like Hugh's version either. It just means she liked Colm's version better.

And I still think Lea is grinning when she reads this because she knows I'm right :)

I hope that means you look at most of Ben Brantley's reviews with the same lens.

This was not a surprising opinion coming from Lea Salonga. There was no way in hell she'd openly trash the film given her ongoing association with Cameron Mackintosh and Boublil-Schoenberg.

One can read between the lines and extract what Salonga did not like about the film.

As for Lisa Schwarzbaum of EW, I find her incredibly grating and her reviews are mostly laughable at best. I only read "professional" critiques after I see the film/performance and not beforehand and with Schwarzbaum, I almost always have to ask whether we saw the same work.
