Seeking suggestions for musicals with strong soprano lead....

Hi, guys -

I know you hate these threads, but hoping you can help. I have a soprano with an incredible instrument who gets shoehorned into Carlotta types due to her shape and size. But she is a wonderful actress with an incredibly vulnerable side that she does not get to show off very often. She is the kind of actress who could easily pull off Rebecca in RAGS, despite her being a totally different size and shape than Stratas was.

Can anyone suggest some roles/shows with a great leading role for a type like this?

How about Starmites? The Diva is a big comedic villain role and the leading lady Eleanor is supposed to be a nerdy comic book-obsessed teenager.

Lordy, Lordy.... I was IN Starmites. That's something I could never put myself through again.

BUT the others are strong suggestions. Any others? Thanks, gang! Really want to give this girl the moment to shine in a way she never gets to...

Can you get away with Urinetown? Pennywise is a great soprano part.

I like Starmites, but no one else I work with does. I'll get to music direct a production some day.

What about "on the twentieth century"? Madeline Kahn's role calls for a decent soprano. Or is that too much the diva type?

I love On the Twentieth Century and She Loves Me. But from the way you've described your leading lady, Iluv, I have a feeling that she may not be right for either the glamorous movie star Lily or the girl-next-door Amalia.

Thanks all! Great suggestions! I'm so happy to announce that shortly after I posted, we finally, after much hemming and hawing, secured the rights to RAGS. It opens May 27th at the Connelly Theatre here in NYC! She's terrific. I'm so excited to give her this chance.
