I will be in NYC for the first time this weekend. I am unsure which show to watch. I would like to watch one of the Christmas shows: Elf, Grinch, etc. Which show would you recommend? I have searched the board and found some information about the shows and the majority seem to be negative. Thanks

I would say A Christmas Story or go see the Rockettes. Honestly you should consider one of the mega famous shows like Wicked or the Lion King if you've never seen them. It's a good touristy thing to do : )

I agree with Faithzilla, A Christmas Story is lots of fun, if it's a Christmas themed Broadway show you desire. There are, of course, a lot of other great shows currently playing.

Hello.

Try going to the show websites or youtube, then make up your own mind based on your own preferences.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for all the responses. I have seen Wicked, Lion King, and really not a big fan of the movie version of the Christmas Story. Has anyone seen either Elf or the Grinch? Are they any good? As I know its pretty last minute for this Saturday, but would love to experience a show in NY. Thanks again

I saw the Rockettes in 2007 and it was wonderful. I don't know what changes have been made since then, but based on the 2007 show I would highly recommend it.
Some people can get a thrill, knitting sweaters and sitting still. That's okay for some people, who don't know they're alive!

I saw them all and they were all awful.

Hope that helps.

The Rockettes Christmas Craptacular is one commercial piece of holiday dreck, just sayin'. Drag Queen bears, Smaltzy Al Rocker (is he still in it?) and a gag inducing live Nativity scene. Why do kick lines encourage applause?

ETA: Do stop by Rockefeller Plaza though, See the tree and the orniments on 6th Ave. Take a trip to the Top of The Rock. Then stroll down 5TH ave to see the wonderful window displays. DO NOT MISS Bergdorf Goodmans windows. Perhaps the most beautifully designed and constructed windows ANYWHERE!

I think you'd like both Elf and the Radio City Rockettes, both of which I really enjoyed and highly recommend.

Catch one of the versions of the Nutcracker that are playing, or my personal favorite, the Butt-Cracker Suite at the HERE Arts Center!

My recommendation would be The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular.

Grinch isn't playing -- it's on tour.

I agree with the above statements, but I've heard ELF, whilc not very good, is lots of fun.

Be aware, that the Xmas shows are going to be packed with gads of chidren. (Of course, YOU might be traveling with children)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I would skip them all and go to the Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet. As entertainment and art, nothing can beat it.

And as for Christmas spectacle, nothing beats the moment when the 12-foot tree becomes a 40-foot tree, set to Tchaikovsky's music.

I'm sorry for my un-Christmas-like attitude earlier in the thread, it's just that two other new posters started identical threads at the same time which puzzled me. They were deleted, but this remains. Whatever. On the off-chance you actually are planning a trip - good luck, and happy holidays.

I went in with low expectations but had a great time at ELF, just my two cents.

Thanks everyone for your responses and suggestions. I decided to go with Wicked. I saw it in San Francisco but had really bad seats. Today, I went on Ticketmaster and decent seats opened up for the show.

I have to agree with Pal Joey: The NYC Ballet's verion of THE NUTCRACKER is beautiful. A real holiday treat.
