That press release is confusing. Will it expand to other IMAX theaters in the US on January 10, as well?

And will how long will the movie remain in IMAX in NYC? For a few weeks?

I wish that they would stop showing films that were not shot on IMAX in IMAX screens. It's such a scam. It's just a blown-up, blurrier image for an extra five+ bucks.

There is even a bigger scam going on with IMAX. That is how they make an average cineplex screen (which is already pretty big) a little wider, shove an IMAX brand projector in the booth and charge IMAX prices for it. That to me is a bigger scam. The company is pulling a bate and switch. When the average Jo thinks of IMAX, they think of that HUGE HUGE screen. As far as I'm concerned, there is only one IMAX in New York City that shows feature films. And, that is the one in Lincoln Square. There is another real IMAX theater but that is at the Natural History Museum and only shows educational documentaries.

If you want an example of the real IMAX verses the fake IMAX, take a look at the link which diagrams the diference. It bugs me that the company is getting away with this. Ebert was right when he said it's like New Coke Verses Classic Coke.

If Les Miserables is playing at the IMAX in Lincoln Square than I would gladly shell out the 20 bucks to go see it. However, it would be a different story if it were playing at the "IMAX" in Times Square or 34th street.

I'm concerned about how Tom Hooper's extreme close-ups of the actors singing will play on IMAX. I'm sure it would look great for establishing shots but people who've seen the film say there's a lot of close-ups.

Winston is right on about the newer, digital IMAX screens (or LIEMAX as they are known colloquially).

Winston is right, the only legit imax theater in the city is the lincoln square 13 lowes and the one at the american museum of natural history.

anything that says 1570 in the format column is a legit imax theater.

The last time I saw something in IMAX, it was Tom Cruise scaling a building in a scuba suit. I'm willing to replace that memory with some Hugh Jackman (circa Valjean's "sexy years").

In case anyone was wondering, Les Miserables is going to be shown in IMAX. However, it is not going to be at the IMAX in Lincoln Square, instead it is going to be in one of the false IMAX theatres in Times Square.

Well, that info saddens me (fake imax) but I do appreciate the info!

I saw one of the Harry Potter films years ago at the Lincoln Center Imax - it looked stretched and sat in the middle of the massive screen with the sides completely unused! I felt ripped off as this was NOT an "Imax Experience" as it was advertised and asked for my money back (don't remember if I got it, though). Suckerpunch and Underworld looked amazing in Imax - those I saw in the "fake" Imax theaters. I did see those movies again on regular movie screens and noticed how clearer they were in Imax - stunning visuals and crystal clear sound. "The Owls of Ga'hoole" and "Avatar" were truly the Imax experience on either the real or the fake Imax screens (preferable on the real Imax screens, as they were filmed in Imax.)

Many times the upconversion to Imax looks and sounds great, hopefully this will be the case with Les Miserables. I was looking forward to seeing it at the AMC Empire but that, alas, is one of the fake Imax screens. The sound is loud and beautiful there, though, and in the end, it's the singing and the score that will be the first priority for me. Hugh Jackman and Samantha Barks twenty feet tall in front of me are also desired

Yeah, I can't imagine AMC wanting to remove The Hobbit from the Lincoln Square IMAX after just 11 days for Les Mis.

On a sort of related note, it looks like the IMAX ticket price is going up another dollar to $21 ($14 before 12pm) starting with The Hobbit. I feel like prices just went up within the past few months.

This is why I stay away from IMAX unless it's something I need to see. $21 is just ridiculous...and that's for non 3DIMAX!

I only go if it's a movie that has incredible special effects and scenery, like Avatar, Underworld, Dark Knight Rises, the lot. If it's "Bridesmaids - the Imax Experience", I run the other way.
