For a serious collector that is not all that crazy of a price. Renderings such as these are really works of art in their own respect. And considering that this appears to be the original sketch, and included the fabric swatches, that makes this a very intriguing item to many collectors. And since the auction was cancelled by the seller I would agree with allofmylife that somebody contacted the seller privately with an offer well above the reserve price.
I believe the dress itself IS in the property of the Museum of the City of New York's theatre collection. They used to have it (with the sleeves added at Alexis Smith's request) on display, along with a copy of the show's three-sheet poster. Very classy.
