The Mudge Boy musical
Posted: 11/10/12 at 09:13am
What an odd choice for a musical. I'm curious to see how they handle the story. The film has a strong indie vibe. You know, a bit ambiguous, a bit introspective, a lot of navel gazing. Translating that would seem to be tricky.

I saw it about 5 or six years ago and thought Emile Hirsch was great, but it's got a very uncomfortable rape scene (I know, there can't be a rape scene that isn't uncomfortable, but when you see this you'll know what I mean) and the lead character (the titular Duncan Mudge) goes around with a pet chicken whose head he keeps popping in his mouth.

I really hope they do away with that particular aspect because when you see a teenager sucking on a live chicken's head like a thumb (keeping it clean here peeps) it's distractingly odd.

Ultimately it's one of movies where a confused gay youth deals with societal expectations and bullying, of which there is an entire sub-genre it seems.

Since there were no adult women in the movie I'm assuming that Donna McKechnie will be playing Duncan's deceased mother in flashback. Right off the bat I think that adding her as a character is a good idea as her absence in Duncan's life is a major factor of his psychology.

Pulling for this one. It has the potential to be a very moving piece of theater.

Anyone else see the film? What are your thoughts?
....but the world goes 'round
