Most if not all principal Elder Price are played by gay actors?

Hi everyone my first post here.

When Gavin Creel was cast this had crossed my mind but I pushed it aside. But now with Matt Doyle coming in, he would be like the third openly gay actor in the role, after Andrew Rannells and Gavin Creel. Nic Rouleau is the only one that I`m uncertain of. At least I couldn`t find anything.

This can`t be purely a coincidence can it? Is it possible that this is something Trey Parker and Matt Stone look for in the role? I seem to recall in an interview they mentioned they were thinking about making one of the main boys gay, which is obviously Price. Even in this current version, Price didn`t seem to have any sexual interest in girls at all, pretty much came off as almost asexual at times.

Just have to get this off my chest sorry. I bought this up with a couple of friends but they said I`m imagining things.

Gay male leads in theatre? You don't say.

They did make one of the Mormon boys gay, but it's not Price. It's McKinley.

Yes I know that CATSNYrevival. But I`m pretty sure I saw an interview somewhere that they originally had plans to make one of the two main characters gay.

I think they are just getting super-talented people for their casts without regard to anything other the actor's ability to be awesome.

Well the character does have a certain "gay boy" type to it. I don't mean that to be rude, as I am a gay boy, but it's not like the part needs some super masculine guy like the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. I mean, he doesn't really have a love interest in the show, etc.

LizzieCurry I understand there are many gay actors in the showbiz, especially when it comes to theatre, but what I`m trying to say is that both "new" Elder Price are very much out and quite well known as openly gay. That`s actually not that common. Andrew Rannells didn`t officially came out to the general public until he left the show, but I believe his sexuality was an open secret anyway.

It's not "gay" that they seek in Elder Price. It's more that Price, though probably not gay as a character, is what you might call a "Peter Pan Twink." Handsome in a non-threatening, youthful, almost pretty way, with a high young voice and a scrubbed, glowing presence. The kind of character that, were they animated, would be voiced by Roger Bart.

The all-American boy, in other words: as much child as man.

And I think it's weird to consider a Broadway actor's sexuality an "open secret" anyway. I mean, we aren't exposed to the kind of media that film actors are privy to. I mean, many of us are gay, but we aren't "out" in the sense of like Neil Patrick Harris.

To the original poster (jazzhands3) who didn't know that Nic Rouleau was gay...he is. He is a sweetheart and a good friend of mine. I wish him all the luck in Chicago!

BwayBuff,
I rea;;y hope to get the chance to see him before he departs NY... and wouldn;t mind seeing the Chicago production.

Jazzhands3,
I take specific issue with several things, but I will just say this. Nothing is an "open secret". Living your life is not an "open secret." Andrew Rannells, specifically, has always lived frankly and openly as a gay man in an around NYC and never pretended otherwise. He does not have to walk down the street screaming "I'm gay!" The general public paid him no mind until after leaving Mormon because he had no pop culture relevance until then and he was very open about his life throught the entire thing. His sexuality was only of initial note because of the rather (unfortunately) hot-button issue of the show.

And the point should be: their sexuality has NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. It's none of our business, and it has nothing to do with talent or being right. Yes, the role seems to be rather sexless, but mostly because it is not ABOUT the sexuality of THAT character.

Who cares if they are gay or not?

I'm going to give the original poster the benefit of the doubt and assume he is not a troll, but just an innocent and presumably young theatre fan.

Jazzhands3, in casting of the role of Elder Price, you look to see if an actor 1) has specific abilities in talent, and 2a) is the type you see in the role, or 2b) if they are not the type you are looking for, will they still be a good fit in the show without doing the show a disservice?

It is a coincidence that all of the actors playing Elder Price are all gay. And it doesn't matter. There are plenty of actors who play a role that does not share their own gender, race, age, religion, or sexual orientation. Eric Stonestreet is straight but plays a gay man on MODERN FAMILY. David Hyde Pierce is gay but plays a straight man on FRAISER. Casting them against their own sexual orientation did not matter because they are believable in their roles.
