If it's free, and there is nothing to indicate a shill or a troll, and it could be of benefit to me, should I still be afraid of it? The factor of the unknown, and the undeniable validity of the personalities behind what I am talking about create an interesting struggle.

What would you do if a total stranger came to you with a tool that could potentially be of great benefit to you in your professional career as a singer, dancer, actor, comedian, reality tv star wanna-be, and just put it in your hands. 100% free of charge, and said "This is for you. It will only work if you put the work into it. Your success with this is entirely up to you. I do not want your money. I do not want to sell you anything. I want to help you work to get the attention you deserve!" What would you do?

Just wondering. Discuss.

Yes, you should be wary. Yes, you should think it through. Yes, you should be on the lookout for that moment when "free" is no longer "free".

But there are people who practice random acts of kindness. I don't think we have to be utter cynics on the subject.

Gaveston, thanks for the reply, and advice. I have been in the entertainment industry as actor, director, producer, writer, every aspect of the technical side of the process, for over 27 years, and quite honestly, have never come across something like this until about 6 months ago. Truly, it intrigued me, and after much research and speaking with the personalities behind it, I have to say, the benefits far outweigh the concern. There is honestly the potential that what has been put forth coud be a tremendous boon to anyone choosing to take a grab at the brass ring.

Jordan... Must I, once again, summon all the dark powers of Hell to silence your lying, forked tongue? By the way, how do you keep the windows clean in that beautiful glass house you live in?

I wish you the best of luck, Ed. But don't forget the part about watching for the moment "when free is no longer free".

As always, Jordan, I appreciate your advice.

What are you folks talking about!! I am thoroughly entertained, I admit.

Playbilly, Jordan has somehow gotten it into his head that I practice witchcraft, and have an alliance with the Devil.

As for the other item, tell me your thoughts on the subject. I would love to get as many opinions on this as possible. No worries. feelings will not be hurt. Speak your mind and I will digest everything I can.

Ed, I don't know what the "tool" you are speaking about, but this industry is full of charlatans. If someone is giving a stranger some kind of magical opportunity, it seems odd. A lead, a tip, an opportunity -- perhaps.

And, are you a witch?

Billy, I have been called many things. Witch has never been one of them until I encountered young Jordan.

And "magical opportunity" is not really a just description of what I am talking about. Nothing magical about it. It is more like giving a handyman a fully loaded toolbox and saying "I know you know how to use all this stuff. Question is, are you going to?"

If the need is there, get it in writing. Whatever "it" might be. I have learned that working in the industry.

If there are no strings attached, make that clear.

Know the risks, take the opportunities.

Here's my two cents-- for what they are worth... and well, I just said what they're worth...

Need you be afraid to accept a random golden opportunity? No. And actually, as Gav said, random acts of kindness do occur, and actually quite often. However, in our industry, "random" doesn't usually mean, literally, totally at random. We've all heard stories about friends of friends getting a big break, or a writer or director wants to hire their favorite bartender who wants to be an actor, or kids who luck into a show because they "remind" the director of someone they used to know. Also, sometimes people just feel nice, and they want to help others-- yes, these things happen.

But more often than not, what seems too good to be true usually is. And especially if it is totally 100% random. In a world where so many people need a lucky break, it's unusual that one would choose to assist someone they had no connection to whatsoever. People are much more inclined to focus on their own before helping others.

Oh, and are you really a witch?

As i told Billy, the moniker of "Witch" is strictly honorary. I was targeted by Jordan a few days ago, and he sent an angry mob to my house to burn me at the stake. Alas, I did not burn. That is not because I am a witch, but my heart is so cold, the flames fled in fear.

Patrick, would you be open to discussion of the other topic either by e-mail, or another medium?

Well said Dennis. You elaborated well. I get so bored typing, I seldom elaborate! I've been fortunate enough to give "breaks" and receive "breaks", but both were known to be deserved. To a random stranger? Seems as unlikely as suspicious. How can you NOT know someone deserving? To pass over a known deserved soul over a stranger? Just seems odd...

Speaking of souls...SURE you're not a witch. It would add a bit to the board.

Billy, if it brings you pleasure, then yes. I am a witch. Pointy black hat, straw-like hair, and I disappear into a cloud of errant hair-pins when I cackle and zip out of the room.

Deserving people... I know lots of them. Infinitely gifted, brilliantly talented individuals who have made the concious choice to rest on their laurels and attempt to go no further. But what of the young person in Kansas or Wisconsin, stuck working on their parents' farm, who has mad passion to share their musical gift with the world, but cannot because of their location, and the feeling that they cannot get out?
