My gf & I saw The Heiress Thurs. 10/11. Totally recommend seeing this wonderful play tested by time. The story is universal and timeless and still relevant today, tho set in 1850. Jessica C. is frumped up a little with a wig and little makeup and she plays Catherine perfectly. Sumptuous set of a grand 19th cent. home. Look for Judith Ivey to shine in the very flashy role of Aunt Lavinia. She really shows her B'way chops - flawless! Also, look for Molly Camp as Marian Almond - she is totally dead on and delightful in the irrepressibly perky role.
Some have wondered if Dan Stevens telegraphed his ulterior motives as Morris. I didn't think so at all. In fact, knowing the play, he was so convincing I was beginning to wonder in the first act if they were changing the second act or something and making him into a good character. Hah! His dark side is all offstage, like in the movie, in not showing up to elope with Catherine.
We were at the stage door afterward and Jessica and Dan couldn't have been nicer and appreciative of us fanboys/girls. Jessica came out first and announced that Dan Stevens' birthday was the day before so tell him when he came out, which we did. They posed for like a million pictures and signed whatever you asked them to. They did not act like like they were doing us a big favor or anything, they seemed to be glad we were there. Judith came out but didn't sign, and David Strathairn never came out at all. (Zachary Quinto was in the audience and went in the stage door afterward with his female companion before the actors came out to see the rest of us!)
Who has wondered about Stevens telegraphing his motives? If anything, I've heard the opposite speculation that he plays them very close to the vest, if not hides them perhaps even too much.
