"Note to the Divas' sons everywhere. Don't film your mother in the wrong aspect ratio.
Double widescreen isn't going to work ... for anyone ... ever. - "
He filmed in the correct aspect ratio, but when he was editing, he "letterboxed" it so he could add those subtitles over the black bar at the bottom. YouTube took his 4:3 video and stretched it to 16:9 automatically, making it double wide.
I think it's a great practice effort, and we're darn lucky to have this series. Patti doesn't seem like the type who would let just anyone film a documentary about her, and I'm sure she was pretty strict about the content included in this series, whether or not it was her son filming her. :-P
Possibly to avoid her crazy younger fans from latching onto him, which is something I witnessed first hand. When I went to see Gypsy, afterward a fan girl kept trying to get him to sign her Gypsy poster, but he kept refusing saying "I wasn't in the show" to which the girl then said "But, you're Patti LuPone's son - that's even better". Finally, after much annoyance from the girl, he signed her poster, but once she asked for a picture, he said "No" and jumped into the car to continue to wait for his mother.
