Preview Weekends

I'm going to be in NY for the first weekend that EDWIN DROOD is playing Previews. This is in fact the primary reason for my visit. Not being a particularly experienced Preview-goer, I wanted to get opinions on when the best time to see the show would probably be. From my experiences as an actor, I can gleam that the first show would have a terrific energy but could also be fairly rough. DROOD is playing five performances that first weekend (two show days Sat. and Sun.) When would you go see it?

I'd go with either the Saturday night or Sunday night performances. Matinee audiences - especially at the subscription houses - are deadly.

I totally concur. (I would choose Sunday night-the cast will be 'warmed up' after having played four performances for an audience.)

Avoid the matinee crowds at that place like the plague.

Oh yes, subscription audiences at matinees. A nightmare. Years ago I went to a matinee of The Secret Garden at the Paper Mill Playhouse. The audience was filled with grumpy old senior citizens (it's too cold, it's too hot, I can't see, what did she say, etc.) and parents with children who they could not or would not control.

I wish I knew that before I bought my Sunday matinee ticket to Drood! Oh, well!
