Today is Thursday, September 6, marking the official opening night for Jenny Lee Stern, Natalie Charle Ellis, Scott Richard Foster and Marcus Stevens, as they star in Gerard Alessandrini's FORBIDDEN BROADWAY: Alive & Kicking, following previews that began July 24 at the 47th Street Theatre. The mounting marks the long-running revue's 30th anniversary, and will continue through January 6, 2013.
Attendees can expect to enjoy spoofs of Porgy and Bess, Once, Evita, Anything Goes, Follies, Spider-Man, Newsies, Book of Mormon, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Death of a Salesman, among others.
Tickets are $29-$79 with premium tickets available for $110. Tickets can be purchased by calling Telecharge at (212) 239-6200 or by visiting telecharge.com. For more information visit forbiddenbroadway.com.
Spirited songs and lively choreography are provided by Gerard Alessandrini, the original creator and director of the often-annual show since 1982, with co-direction and additional dialogue by Phillip George. The sharp, witty production is back in its regular location at off-Broadway's 47th Street Theatre, and while Alessandrini finds much to criticize about the current state of Broadway musicals, his love of theater clearly shines through despite his joy in skewering many of the current offerings.
Not all the sketches are prime Alessandrini, but enough are treasures that make it hard to resist ruining the jokes by repeating them for you. Suffice it to say that the new cast -- Natalie Charle Ellis, Scott Richard Foster, Marcus Stevens and, extra specially, Jenny Lee Stern -- is another gifted quartet of ridiculous chameleons.
In an age that prizes bargains and shortcuts, Gerard Alessandrini’s rejuvenated “Forbidden Broadway,” which arrives packing polished brass knuckles, is a godsend. It returns to New York, where it was born 30 years ago, after a three-year absence. And its timing is impeccable.
