Was anyone there today who had seen the show before? I was wondering how far off script they got with the sandwich debacle. Or if it was business as usual?
I was there and had THE BEST time! This was my favorite production of last season and seeing it again this afternoon reminded me why I fell in love with it in the first place. It's just full to the brim with such silly, unbridled joy that can only be found in live theater.
There were a lot of special ad-libs, etc today that tacked on a good extra 15+ minutes to the running time.
During the sandwich scene, at least five people from the audience said they had food for Corden, who was a little taken aback at first, but ultimately was a great sport about it. One person even chucked their sandwich from the mezzanine and it landed right on the stage. And to top it off, he opened the door on stage left, got rid of the sandwiches, and came back onstage to pick up where he left off, but five different cast members walked on, one after the other, each eating one of the sandwiches that was thrown onstage. It was really hysterical.
There were a handful of moments where some of the actors tried to make another actor break, many of which worked and cracked the audience up. During the scene where Oliver Chris' character is caught pantless, he had underwear on with James Corden's face on the butt and the crotch. Corden pulled down his underwear when he turned around, which was hilarious. And in the scene where Jemima Rooper flashes her boobs to James Corden, she actually flashed her boobs to him. The look on his face and his reaction were just priceless.
Those were just a few of the moments I can remember that were off-script today...it was very funny to see them having such a good time and just going balls to the wall.
Tom Edden came out to bow in an "I <3 NY" shirt, and got on his knees to kiss the stage. And Corden was hysterically crying during his bows. It was very bittersweet. But it was truly one of the funniest afternoons I have ever spent in the theater, if not the funniest. I'm so glad this show is leaving New York a hit. It couldn't have deserved it more.
Thank-You Wickedrocks! I thought there was a lot off book! This was my first experience with this show! I was doubled over!! I have NEVER laughed so much at the theatre in my life! All the "sandwiches" being delivered (thrown on the stage had me in tears! Silly, joyous and freaking INCREDIBLE!
At the end of the dinner scene Oliver Chris asks James Corden to taste a glass of wine and he drinks it down in one gulp. Today the glass was filled with real wine, unknown to James until he drank it. That's why he threw the pitcher of water at Oliver.
We saw the show Saturday, but saw Corden at The Nomad bar on Sunday night, around 6:30PM. He was there with a couple of friends, and only for about 15-30 minutes before he was off.
Was there a curtain call speech or special guests in the audience? And I take it that the trunk lifters were just regular audience members? Interesting that Donald Trump might have been the only celebrity to get picked to lift the trunk during the run.
Also, did anyone try to do the stage door thing afterwards? I'm wondering how many people were there. When I went earlier in the run, there were maybe 15 - 20 people there, but I noticed it looked more like 50 people earlier this week when I was at The Best Man across the street. I guess Corden must have gone to that bar between the stage door and the closing party. (There must have been a closing party, right?)
Nomad hotel is down on 28th and B'way, so it's possible he left and came back for a party, I guess.
Lines at the stage door on Saturday night were too big for us to consider getting our Playbills signed. We had no time after the matinee we saw, so figured we'd give it a shot at night, but no dice.
Donald Trump got called up to help with the trunk? Please tell me that story! Hahaha
No curtain call speech, although it looked as though James wanted to make one. He seemed a bit overwhelmed though, and after hesitating, just walked offstage.
