There is a biography of Libby Holman called "Dreams That Money Can Buy" published maybe 20-25 years ago and it is terrific. The reviews were quite good, but there was no paperback edition.
Find a copy. Abebooks.com or maybe Amazon. This is a keeper.
Talk about a messy life.
There are four major show business scandals all involving the violent death of someone: Fatty Arbuckle, Lana Turner, O.J. Simpson and Libby Holman.
All but Lana Turner's careers were clipped short.
However Libby was acquitted of her husband's murder and inherited a huge amount of money from the estate. Her husband was the heir to the R.J. Reynolds tobacco fortune. He was about 10 years younger than Libby, and of dubious sexuality, but then so was she, so it was sort of a match.
Like I said, a messy life. And that's only part of it.
The YouTube video you are referring to is not a live recording. It was taken from the 1942 studio recording for the album "Blues Till Dawn" (actually, 3 x 78rpm record set). The guy who produced the video skillfully took the track and sonically enhanced it to create a live feel and of course included live audience clapping/noise. It works well and I only wish I could hear some real live recordings with Libby and Josh....I believe their are some private recordings out there but none have been released. To get all the Blues Till Dawn tracks try iTunes, as they are now available.
