If Romy were coming to Broadway, it wouldn't be her first time on stage. She and Michele were born as minor characters in Robin Schiff's stage play LADIES' ROOM. The two were such a hit with audiences that Schiff spun them off into the screenplay for ROMY & MICHELE'S HIGH SCHOOL REUNION.
Intersting, followspot, I've heard Lisa Kudrow say they were characters in a play (based off a Groundlings sketch Kudrow did), then a sitcom pilot, then based off Kudrow's fame from Friends she got the movie made.
Such a wildly funny movie/performances all around.
I love Romy & Michelle, but Sorvino is the best in Mighty Aphrodite! Such an awesome performance.
I haven't seen it yet, but she is in Union Square with Tammy Blanchard, Patti LuPone and Daphne Rubin-Vega. Did this come and go from theaters already?
@nasty_khakis/tazber — I actually saw LADIES' ROOM in L.A. back in the day, and Kudrow is the thing I most remember about it. I don't know who played Michele (I have the program somewhere in storage, but... ugh), but she was short, round, and brunette — not at all a Mira Sorvino type in looks — but also hilarious. The entire play took place in the ladies restroom of a club, with various characters — Romy and Michele among them — drifting in and out.
Kudrow's work in the play (and yes, with The Groundlings) helped get her the Friends gig, and she then used her popularity there to develop Romy and Michele into a feature film opportunity.
Sorvino is iffy in spots in Aphrodite. I think Romy is her best overall performance. Her work in dramas is usually pretty lifeless. I did think Mimic was fun.
One of my all-time favorite comfort food films, and one that gets the Dodgers around the TV. Brother Dodger took last year's reunion photo from Entertainment Weekly and framed it.
Is LADIES ROOM available for purchase from DPS, or French, etc.? Sounds like something that might be up my alley?
