Godspell revival this year--too short-lived! :(

Am I the only person here who LOVED the Godspell revival from late last year?

I saw it and loved the modern take--as well as the music compared to the original. It is a staple on my playlist. Was an intimate setting and all around amazing performance.

Anybody care to share their thoughts--either for or against mine welcome! :)

The production ran a lot longer than it should have. The sales weren't great from the beginning and the performance on the Tonys clarified that it wasn't a show that should stay around and thus it closed.

I'm sure it was a goodish show, but compared to other shows that opened this season it wasn't up to par.

I'm surprised Dollypop hasn't commented yet.
Also, it actually had a nice 9-month run. I wouldn't say it's "short-lived!"

News Flash: 35-30 years ago revivals didn't run longer than nine months. Even the best ones. Then CHICAGO happened.

The revival of Oh! Calcutta! opened in 1976 and ran 13 years.

Several other revivals before Chicago ran 1-4 years. Not surprisingly, the farther back you go, the fewer shows you have to revive. Chicago broke the record, but revivals running longer than 9 months happened before and since.

I was not a fan of this staging in so many ways. I went really wanting to love it; I left not even getting to "like". Godspell wasn't written as a rock opera, IMHO. Trying to transform it into one while simultaneously performing it in the round just didn't work for me. I also thought Hunter Parrish just wasn't all that charismatic...which is kinda necessary if you're gonna be Jesus

What do you want me to say?

GODSPELL was the best show that I saw last season. I saw it so many times that I had to take a part time job to finance my obsession.

I am glad we all have our own opinions! That is one amazing thing about Broadway/theatre-- what one person loves another person loathes!

Admittedly there are some who automatically hate what a lot of people like just to be different, but in the case of Godspell I can see where some would not like the direction it went.
