i am treid of seeing all this shows go by the waste side and not have cast cd's made of them these shows need cast cd's 1 lennon 2. cry baby 3. good vibrations and some more that i can not think about know so who with me to save these shows form disappear forever
I don't think John Lennon's music or the Beach Boys' music will be lost forever. And I think CRY BABY does okay in stock and amateur. Those three shows are so long gone that I don't think it will matter to anyone that they're recorded. They won't sell, and cast albums don't sell much these days to begin with!
Recordings are made to make money, not for posterity. The cost is crazy to record and if the production can't get an audience, who's going to buy the cd? There aren't enough people in the world that care to listen to a flop.
(I know I don't. I won't buy the cd to a show unless I love it. And even then, I'm pretty picky. It kills me how many recordings I own that I've only listen to once or twice.)
Carousel is a successful musical masterpiece and has been around for 50 years plus and is produced all over the world, so it's bound to have lots of cast CDs.
The musicals you mentioned and many more wont have cast CDs as they are not successful and you will probably never see them again.
For those interested, tickets are available online for the Carousel concert at NY Philharmonic, dates are Wed, Feb 27th, 2013 through Sat, Mar 2nd, 2013.
I only count 8 major English Language recordings of the score. Hardly too much for a classic score and landmark musical (far more groundbreaking than Oklahoma!, I believe) a few years from its 70th anniversary.
Original Broadway Cast 1955 Studio Cast Film Soundtrack 1962 Studio Cast with Alfred Drake (not on CD) 1965 Lincoln Center Cast 1987 London Studio Cast 1993 London Revival 1994 Broadway Revival
Since all of those were before your dearly departed wish list, brian, I'd hardly say recordings of Carousel are preventing new shows from being recorded. Besides, there are more than 2 times the amount of recordings with of songs from Good Vibrations and Lennon.
I know it'll go in one ear and out the other, but felt the need to respond, regardless.
Smaxie, that's indeed true. Maybe this NY Phil concert will be so good that it'll get a recording. While the 1994 Revival album, the original cast album and the movie soundtrack all have their great points, I long for a definitive CAROUSEL recording.
Carousel is a masterpiece and deserves numerous recordings. What always baffles me is why there are so many recordings of Joseph... Dream Coat. Joseph is a fun show but it's not even one of Loyd Webbers best shows.
Joseph is one of his mot popular and over produced shows. Audiences love being able to bring home a recording of the cast they saw, and most of those recordings are cheap and dreadfully under-produced.
Yeah I know. I understand the logistics of why there are so many Joseph recordings but it just seems rediculous that such a mediocre show would have so many recordings.
