Has anyone here purchased one of the made to order DVDs from the online WB library? How's the quality?
This warning was given, so I just wanted to find out some more info before I made the purchase:
"Important: This title has been manufactured from the best-quality video master currently available and has not been remastered or restored for this DVD/Digital Download release."
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
I've ordered several dvds from WB MOD and they have all been excellent. Titles from both remasters as well as original sources.
That's just a disclaimer they put on all titles that are taken from older sources. The picture is always fine, and usually a lot better than that sentence leads you to expect.
I would suggest waiting for a sale though. There should be a Labor Day sale coming up soon.
I've never had a problem with any of their discs. I have several.
One other thing to note: they say something about these DVD-Rs not being able to play in computers with DVD readers, only actual DVD players. I've never tried to play any of their discs on my computer, but if that's something you would do, be aware that they might not work. At least they tell you up front that they won't.
There's 2 that I really want but they never seem to have a sale for only 2. But they have IF LOOKS COULD KILL (a really bad 1988 Richard Grieco film I loved as a kid) and one of my all-time favorite films, USED PEOPLE starring Shirley MacLaine, Jessica Tandy, Marcia Gay Harden, Kathy Bates and so many others.

Thanks for the answers. The first two seasons of Without a Trace were sold commercially, but didn't do well. The third season (and soon the fourth) will be released via this online program. I didn't want to spend the money on a whole season of episodes if the quality wasn't going to be up to snuff, but judging from your answers I'll take the risk on season 3.

Oh, wow! They lowered the price of the movies I've been wanting by $10! Add in the 20% off and I's a very happy boy today.

I have the season of Falcon Crest on DVD-R, I think it's WB made to order, and the quality is fine. There are some concerns with these discs--they often don't remaster them unless a previous remaster exists, so for older films they can be hit or miss (Without a Trace should be more than fine, obviously). I also know that these discs can be more susceptible to issues--I know one disc with Falcon apparently froze on quite a few people's players, according to forums, though mine was fine, and the site they bought them from was happy to send a replacement disc. I gues because of how they're made, burning issues could be a problem, and so issues are inconsistant (I'm just guessing).
I've never had an issue playing them on my computer, but I know some older DVD drives did have issue with them, the same way some CD players had issue with CD-Rs (the one in my car still well usually not play them). What I find kinda depressing is people claim the life-span of DVD-Rs, like CD-Rs could be under 20 years--something about the ink process used on them fading away. But I guess by then there'll be some replacement.
I really wish they'd release some more TV that was left unfinished this way. I've been waiting ten years for the brilliant Herskovitz/Zwick (of thirtysomething and My So-Called Life fame)'s Once and Again's third, and final season. I've also finally given up hope on getting more Knots Landing, though there was some talk they would pick it up after releasing all of Dallas, but I believe that finished up on DVD nearly two years back. They left off with Season 2--ironically, Season 3 was where it went full soap mode and got really good...
(And I want the film of Inge's Dark at the Top of the Stairs, with Angela Lansbury, but that seems a lost cause for any home media release).
They're doing something wonky with their bundling. They have a 4-movie Gene Kelly pack that includes "Invitation to the Dance" and three other films (that I already have) for $10.99 ... but if you buy that one movie by itself, it's $15.99 on sale.
Weird.
EDIT: This is actually a fantastic deal for anybody interested ...
