SPECULATION thread -- vacant theaters
Posted: 8/17/12 at 04:39pm
**THERE'S NO FACTS TO BACK ANY OF THIS UP. IT'S ALL JUST SEMI-EDUCATED GUESSING. IF ANYONE HAS BETTER GUESSES/CORRECT INFO, PLEASE SHARE.**

Currently, four theaters haven't announced their fall/early winter productions. This is just an all-purpose thread to talk about what might go in them.

Rodgers -- has a tenant, but hasn't announced it. I'm going to guess The Nutty Professor, since Motown isn't slated to open until 2013.

Sondheim -- transfer of If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet. The only upcoming film on Jake Gyllenhaal's IMDB page is one he's merely rumored for. I'm willing to bet if the reviews are good, and the hot (in every sense) star draws a crowd, we'll get a Jan-June run.

I'm not at all sure about the Lyceum and the Circle.

By the way, I'm Rodgerdodger. Nice to meet you all.

I'm guessing Cat on a Hot Tin Roof has the Rodgers.

MOTOWN has a theatre, not the Rodgers.
Early 2013.

CurtainDownPuller, not sure your sources, but mine are that MOTOWN is Fall of 2013. Not Spring. It's next season.

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF is a good guess for the Richard Rodgers.

Could HANDS ON A HARD BODY be possible for the Circle In The Square? I suspect (my own suspicion, not based on any insider info) that the Lab they're doing this Fall is to see if it's possible to do in the round.

I think the Jake Gyllenhaal Exploitation Hour will be like Roundabout’s Sons of the Prophet from last season. It’ll extend several times off-broadway, but a Broadway transfer under the Roundabout umbrella will be impossible because the subscribers already saw it. If it were to transfer commercially, it would be another story.

I’m calling Nutty Professor at the Sondheim.

I have no inside knowledge, but I could see Hands on a Hardbody in Circle in the Square. It could add something to the storytelling and give them more ways to pull the cast away from the truck than "go downstage." All the stories about the show after the reviews came in suggested a quick push for Broadway.

You could be right Capt.
We shall see, none of these Theatres are gonna be empty for long.

I dunno, I have a hard time seeing Hands on a Hardbody work at Circle in the Square. Saw it at its run at the La Jolla Playhouse, the truck is more of a co-star in the show as some of the lesser players. If you put one on that stage, you're gonna end up blocking a good part of the lower rows from being able to see what's happening on the other side. Unless you were to have one commissioned out of lucite or something clear. Then again, I'm still trying to get the horror of Godspell in that space out of my head...

Hands on Hardbody can use the Circle in the Squares extreme thrust formation and just wheel the truck in and out in during the musical numbers. They can also do what the Ragtime revival did with their Model T, and build it out of PVC pipe which would add to the symbolism of the truck being simply more than a way to get from point A to Point B. That may be an issue though since from the videos of the production I have seen they truck is used as a percussion instrument as well.

Bumping this thread for late winter/spring of 2013. Assuming Breakfast at Tiffany's does take the Cort, by my count, there are 11 theaters with nothing lined up for then:

Barrymore
Belasco*
Booth*
Golden
Longacre
Music Box*
Marquis*
Simon
Kerr*
St. James
Studio 54*

* = current production could conceivably extend

Let the speculation begin.

I would keep an * next to the Marquis because they may pull a "A Little Night Music"

Isn't Trip to Bountiful going into the Sondheim?

Maybe it's because they got tired of all those standing ovations and there mad as hell and there not going to take it anymore.

We're now down to seven:

Belasco
Longacre
Rodgers
Simon
St. James
Studio 54*
New Amsterdam

* = Could conceivably extend

I know Big Fish and the Les Miz tour are slated for the Simon and New Amsterdam, but I wondered if either were getting short-term tenants. Also, is The Miss Firecracker Contest still on? I seem to recall it being a Shubert production.

Is GLASS MENAGERIE transferring from ART? I remember hearing wind of that when Celia Keenan-Bolger left PETER.

Les Miz tour has not officially announced.

Rumored shows for this season:

- DETROIT
- MISS FIRECRACKER CONTEST

Beyond March 10th? Not going to happen.

I talked to Stephanie about a month or so ago and asked if there was any word on an extension, and she said it was highly unlikely. So Studio 54 is most likely going to be available.

Also- whatever happened with ALLEGIANCE? They still coming this season?

Allegiance is getting another workshop this spring I believe. Still some stuff that needs to be polished from the San Diego version before it comes in possibly next fall. Les Mis is not coming in until at least after its Toronto run concludes (early '14?)

At this point although I know Phantom of London is trolling, I do think ALW would consider puting Love Never Dies on Broadway in a limited run. By doing Love Never Dies as a limited run, we know its purley a vanity production and not one truly looking to turn a profit, akin to Disney with Newsies, except Newsies' reviews from its Papermill production merited a transfer. Although we all know Disney hoped Newsies would extend and tun a profit, like it did, at the time of the Broadway production's announcement, the production was a vanity project for amateur and stock production hype. If ALW does Love Never Dies as a limited run, if it flops like it did in London he would not have to put his tail between his legs.
