Patti LuPone in The Anarchist: Now at The Golden, not Lyceum.

David Mamet's The Anarchist, starring Tony Award winner Patti LuPone and Academy Award nominee Debra Winger, which was previously announced for Broadway's Lyceum Theatre, will now play the Golden Theatre, producers announced Aug. 6.

The two-woman drama, set in a female penitentiary, will still begin previews as scheduled on Nov. 13 towards a Dec. 2 opening. The production is scheduled for a 14-week run through Feb. 17, 2013.

Mamet (Glengarry Glen Ross, Oleanna, Speed-the-Plow) will direct his intense drama about "two powerful women forced to engage in a cage match of wits."

The 90-minute play casts LuPone (Evita, Gypsy) as Cathy, a longtime inmate with ties to a violent political organization, who pleads for parole from the warden, Ann, to be played by Winger.

LuPone has a long history with Mamet. The two first worked together on his drama The Woods in 1977. LuPone's Mamet appearances also include The Water Engine, Edmond, The Old Neighborhood and the film "State and Main."
The Anarchist marks Winger's Broadway debut. She is a three-time Academy Award nominee for "Terms of Endearment," "Shadowlands" and "An Officer and a Gentleman."

The Anarchist will have scenic and costume design by Academy Award winner Patrizia Von Brandenstein and lighting by Tony Award winner Jeff Croiter.

I guess the Golden will be done with its renovations soon. it's a better move as the Lyceum rarely houses a hit show(play or musical).

I guess the Exorcist is not coming to Broadway since this was supposed to be their tentative house, unless they are going in somewhere else.

Good. I really hate the Lyceum.

Definitely a smart move: a smaller theatre (by ~100 seats) and a much better location.

I'm so excited for this show.

I would imagine after the review it got out of town, THE EXORCIST will not be coming to NY.

^ Exorcist reviews? How bad were they on a scale from Iron Dog to Bombshell?

The reviews for Exorcist were mixed. I saw it and, while I enjoyed myself, I didn't think it was strong enough to go to broadway.

I could see it doing a limited fall run next year however.

I'm curious as to what you all might think the "dynamic" will be between Patti and Debra. from RC in Austin, Texas

The Golden is probably the more appropriate house for the Mamet play, but Glenda, what gives? The Lyceum is my all-time favorite house. Why do you hate it?

Now that they've put the THE ANARCHIST at the Golden, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS will be playing two houses down at the Schoenfeld at the same time. That could be a key element in this decision to change theatres.

Eh. I don't know that Mamet fans are going to care if it's at the Golden or the Lyceum. I personally love the Lyceum. And while it hasn't housed a lot of hits, it's had a lot of creatively full-filling projects.

The only problem with the move is the ticket price change. I was going to get the $35 balcony seats but now with the move the prices, it's going to be difficult.

I keep on reading this thread title as "Patti LuPone is the Antichrist!"

Up until this thread, I thought the play was called The Antichrist.
