The new Total Recall was stupid, but...

I LOVED Kate Beckinsale! She kicked some serious ass in this movie, even if the rest of it was a bore/had the lamest dialogue in a while. "In Time" looked brilliant compared to this!

Kate made me glad I went though. I haven't seen any of her Underworld movies. Are they any good?

The original was also stupid but it was fun. AT the time the FX were cutting edge and the story was, well stupid but fun. I remember seeing it when I was a kid and being freaked out with Rob Bottin's Make Up effects. They eyes bugging out of their head in the opening scene and the end will never leave my mind. The bad guy at the end literally blowing up (or inflating) amazed me. The remake looks too clean and appears to be a bit more serious(I could be wrong because I have not seen it) The original had some camp to it which is why I've always enjoyed it. When I saw the trailer to this new one I just had zero interest.I miss action films of the 80's and the 90's.

I never saw the original so can't really say how this one compares. I felt like the recall scenario was extraneous and pointless.

SPOILER****************
Since the plot takes place entirely in reality and never in a recall dream I didn't see the point of it. It was such a weak red herring and I assume that the original made it seem more like a real possibility that he could have been in recall.

END SPOILER***********

Kate added some camp to the action sequences but Farrell was so serious and didn't have any funny one-liners like an action star needs.

Well, since you've seen the new version you should treat yourself and check out Arnold's version. Not sure if you'll like it but I can almost say with certainty you will laugh and have some fun.Sounds like the new version may have changed some things from the original. The 1990 version is just mindless fun, nothing more.

The original had Arnold at the height of his popularity with cutting edge special effects, but was not a great movie by any shakes. Dumb fun. New one is much the same, dumb fun without any cutting edge. Colin is a better actor than Arnold, so you feel more the character.

SPOILER: I liked that they made the wife the chief person chasing him rather than the character Michael Ironside played in the original. Also liked the bit at the security check with the little lady with red hair. Nice twist for peeps who saw original.

END SPOILER

I do want to check the original out. I love a good action movie, but for a film like this I want them to have a degree of fun. I felt like this remake lacked any sense of humor.

This is really funny, because just yesterday I discovered Kate Beckinsale was in this and that made me want to see it. I kind of wanted to see it anyway, but I do love Miss Kate B.

Was "In Time" the one with Justin Timberlake? I thought that one turned out to be better than I expected.

Phyllis- If you love Kate you must see this. She scowls, tosses her hair, runs down every hallway automatic weapon in hand and it's amazing!! Even has a camp line, "I give good wife."

Yes, "In Time" was the Timberlake movie. The best thing about that movie was you could play an excellent drinking whenever someone says a line with "time" in it. "We don't have enough time!" "There isn't time!" "You got here just in time!"

They also should have called it "Just in Time" instead of "In Time" to get the stupid play on Justin's name. It did have an interesting premise though, and the social commentary was much stronger than the attempts made in the "Total Recall" remake.

From what I remember of the portion of that movie I've seen it would not take long before you are flat on your *ss playing that drinking game.

Another fun one is taking a drink for every time Arnold says "freeze" or makes a terrible freeze/cold/ice "pun" in Batman and Robin. Just make sure you have a lot of alcohol on hand, you'll go through it pretty quickly.

Haven't seen this, but the original movie realy works because of Verhoeven's pulpy brilliance. Just enough social satire to work but never be distracting, and in a sleazysort of way, it's a lot of fun. I worried that this remake would drop all sense of that.

I, like Eric, enjoy the original for the fun, sleazy, outrageous, pulpy junkfood quality that Verhoeven served the audience. Cannot imagine anybody except a purist of the Philip K. Dick story objecting.

I like Kate Beckinsale (I'd rather just watch another Underworld film) and Colin Farrell fine, but I will just wait until McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths comes out to watch Farrell.

I'm going to see this ASAP because it's got Colin Farrell and he's #3 on my list.

Colin is shirtless for the first part of the movie and looks part damn fine. I definitely wouldn't say no.

Only part damn fine? I've always had a thing for him--since at least Minority Report, although if in some weird universe I ever got with him, he'd have to leave the dirty talk at the door (judging by that infamous tape which *of course* I have never seen...)

I loved the original. A rollercoaster of a ride with a great mind-f*ck of a scenario.

Is it all part of the "recall" or is it real?

Love that.

As for the remake ... I'll Google Colin and turn off the "safe search" if I want to see more.

I have to say that I no longer understand the logic of going to see a movie JUST to see some man meat (which seemed to be the main draw for many people to go see Magic Mike). After all, in this day and age, a quick Google search will show you everything you would see in the movie (and many times more) and you're not surrounded by people in a public place.

Neither here nor there, but after being "forced" to see a number of the idfferent male strippers in Montreal (they have different venues for different types), by my roomate, I was shocked to hear that in much of the US they never go beyond a g string. You can see that on daytime tv...

Midwest, thanks for that link. Can't believe they completely ignored Fourth Man though.
