Is Anyone Here Also A Member Of All That Chat?

On a whim, I decided to register for "All That Chat". There is a bit of hoops one has to jump thru to become a member. This is what I received from them: Successful confirmation, you must now wait for the Talkinbroadway Staff to approve your account.

Talkin' Broadway Subscriber Registration Form

I guess after that hacking problem they had some time ago, they instituted new measures. RC

Definitely not. If you think posters are mean here on BWW, just read a few threads over there... yikes!

I don't think they are very different. Pretty boring, actually.

People have actually had their applications denied before. They are tough. The members can be really bitter and mean. Worse than here.

I was a member from the beginning and I said something they didnt think was appropriate. Believe it or not I said to a guy being a puts. "Why not take your ball and go home." I was told I was being threatening and they took my post down.

That was my last day on TB.

I'm registered but I've never posted. There are some very interesting, well-informed people there, but too many batsh*t-crazy control freaks for my comfort level. And it's not a very....democratic board.

BWW is much more balanced.

Agreed, BWW, for all its craziness is a much better environment.

I'm a member of both boards. I think there are a lot more industry people on ATC. Each has their pros and cons. I did get kicked off once at ATC but was let back in. I mentioned I watched a bootleg video of a much desired Broadway flop musical and that was a big no-no!

ATC looks like it has not changed since the dawn of the Internet.

Especially given that the median age there is like 85.

I was going to say, I hate the layout so much. It gives me a headache trying to go through it. Not a member, but just my observations when people had shared stuff from there over here.

I think they're a bunch of stuffed shirts with no sense of humor whatsoever. I spoke my mind there and eventually was either kicked out or I quit. I can't remember which. haha!

I am not a member, but I have gone on there to read first preview reviews. The layout is like a maze, and it seems like everything becomes a fight instantly.

No, that's always been the case, and I wish they did it here. That and other measures they take cut down on the trolls and sockpuppetry that run rampart here. It's very hard to take this board seriously at times, what with all the joke threads and petty in-fighting that goes on here. It's so clique-ish and Junior high here, and I don't know what you'd have to do to get banned. A few posters here treat this board as their personal sandbox. That would never be allowed on ATC.

Their layout, however, does leave a lot to be desired.

I was a member there for a while several years ago. But the place is full of know-it-alls that are like dogs with a rag. There's just no discussing things if they have a different idea in their head. Go over there and ask if Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd are supposed to have had sex. You'll see what I mean.

The other reason is the skelaton thread format. Impossible to follow anything. Plus, no avatars. I think avatars are important. It makes people more recognizable from thread to thread, and within a thread. Also gives the posts some personality. BWW is 1000 times better. People are smarter and funnier here too.

Oh dear! I do agree that the serpentine system they use for posts reminds me of the 90's. I used to belong to a forum called "Bouelvard" (all things Sunset). It dissolved around the year 2000 or so. From what you all have described, the moderators on ATC sound like a co-op board. from RC in Austin,Texas

A while ago, I was thinking about getting an account on ATC (before I discovered the BWW forum), but I decided not to because of how ancient the website is. Back then I didn't know about how mean the posters were on that forum, and just judged it on the web layout. Now I decided to just stay on BWW.

And of course, we know from the outpouring at this site that true wisdom, theatrical or otherwise, belongs exclusively to purview of the savvy 19-year-old.

I always thought the perception was that BWW was the bitchier site, but I never felt compelled go stick around there to really find out. I agree with Kad about its look. Also everyone seems so humorless there.

BWW is by FAR the bitchier site - and the more juvenile.

I had a long history with them and was kicked off their board twice. The first time for mentioning the "bootleg" word. I figured "whatever" and moved on.

A few months later I found myself wanting to reply to various posters there. I used my partner's email address and was granted membership. Things went swimmingly for several years. Having grown up in Manhattan and having parents who regularly took me to the theatre, I felt I had a lot to offer and share. I even made yearly donations to the site in appreciation.

THEN I screwed up again. While on Youtube one day I ran across some amazing rehearsal footage from an old Sondheim show I had only seen in revivals. In books I'd read and people I had spoken to who had seen the original, the scenery and costumes were always described as breathtakingly beautiful. And for the first time I was able to see rare clips of it in all its glory. Since people were putting up YouTube clips left and right, I excitely posted the link to it. The post was immediately removed and there awaiting me in my mailbox was my ATC pink slip.

The second time my membership was revoked I was more offended than angry. I thought my presence there was actually appreciated and felt if I had unknowingly broken some house rule I should've at least deserved a warning. Nope.

And BTW the rehearsal footage from Youtube (with those ghostly chorus girls) is still there to view all these years later. Apparently no surviving contributor involved in the production deemed it necessary to have removed. Why should they? It's a tribute to their genius.
