She had some really good moments acting wise, but more awkward and forced moments, that came off as 'look at me i can be a serious actress too'. The vocals were not the best either but who knows with a strong director and a great vocal couch she could be good.
This is her and Julie Klausner duetting "Wichita Lineman" on Klausner's live How Was Your Week? podcast. There is a lot more audio and it is worth a listen. Klausner always does musical bits for her live shows. She recently did "Finale B" and "Let Me Be Your Star" (in a medley that has songs that are inside jokes on the podcast).
Back in the 90s, it was rumored that Bernhard really wanted to do FUNNY GIRL. I would have been fascinated to see her have a go at it. She certainly has the star quality, and I think she has a lot better voice than people ever give her credit for.
Just from listening to some clips of her singing online, i don't think she could have gotten through eight shows a week as Fanny Brice. She would have been hilariousness but she could never match up when compared to Streisand.
I don't know, random person. Bernhard tours the country extensively doing her musical act, so while she's not singing anything near as demanding as FUNNY GIRL, she certainly has experience maintaining vocal stamina on a consistent basis. It would have been very, very interesting to say the least.
I think she would have made a fascinating Fanny Brice. A lot better than Lea Michele or a lot of the other suggestions I've heard. Personally, I'm still interested to see what Lauren Ambrose would have done with the role. She's brilliant actress and singer.
She's the best.....should have been nominated and won an Oscar for The King of Comedy. I don't think we've seen the best of her yet....she's wonderful.
I love her, and even enjoy her singing in the context of her shows, but this is seriously wrong. She pushes the melodic line, pointlessly, attempting to prove she can hit specific notes, when she might've let the lyrics and their emotional import carry the moment. It's an acting song, an unbidden epiphany, not a soulful torch. A misfire on every front.
