Addams Family tour to be filmed for release?

Haven't seen this posted yet, but Doug Sills did an interview where he says the Addams Family musical tour will be filming for a potential feature release in Washington DC. Here's the full response:

"Int: Is there any chance the show may be recorded with the new songs?

DS: We haven't talked about recording it, but we have set a filming date. When we get to Washington, DC in a month, a new company has come on board and paid for the rights to film the show for feature release. There will be several days of multi-camera filming of the show in performance. That will go on a feature DVD, which will have feature release and then will go out to PBS and DVD sales.

This is also the edition, the creators have decided, that will be published. It also just opened in Brazil, will shortly open in Australia and shortly after that they hope on the West End. This is the show they hoped for but didn't have the opportunity to finally fix, because when they realized it needed work, they already had their Broadway date (about five years ago); they just didn't have the window. Jerry Zaks did come on board as director but he was hamstrung to some degree by a time constraint. "

If they were going to film this, why in God's name didn't they do it with the OBC?

I understand they have made changes, and maybe want some kind of archival copy of the show once it starts getting licensed to theater groups, but still...

They're on itunes. There is a new opening number and one other I can't recall the name of.


ETA: Not Today is on itunes. I thought the new opening was too, but apparently it's not.

There's a few new songs, such as "Secrets" sung by the mothers, "Not Today" by Gomez (on the OBCR as a bonus), and a few more. A few of them were uploaded to the Addams Family YouTube page.

Some of the changes seem really bizarre to me (a quartet of "Crazier Than You" by the normal family and Wednesday), but the majority of the changes (especially axing that squid/+ song) are for the best.

What do you have to search to find these songs on iTunes? I looked it up but I still can only find the OBCR, which I already own.

The songs aren't on iTunes (thus why people are questioning a DVD release vs a updated cast recording or EP). Andrew Lippa (the composer-lyricist) sings "Not Today" which is a bonus track on the album.

You can purchase it separately. That's what I did.

It is kind of funny that with the original cast being celebrated Broadway performers - multi-Tony nominees/winners Nathan Lane, Bebe Neuwirth, Terry Mann, Carolee Carmello, Kevin Chamberline, etc. that they decide to film the tour cast, who while good, have no place in selling this piece outside of the Broadway community (as much as I love Doug Sills).

PBS has NEVER filmed a Broadway show.

PBS is publicly funded and can not afford to film anything. Other companies film these. PBS only airs them. They also don't film those shows that air as part of LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER. Lincoln Center themselves film those and PBS airs them for them.

Also don't forget, the producers have to put up a good chunk of cash to get these filmed. The producers of Follies and Gypsy didn't put up the cash, that is why they didn't get filmed. The producers of The Addams Family must see this as an opportunity to help license the show later and they are willing to put up the money to make that gamble.

My brother was very dissapointed that I saw the tour when it came through our town but he didn't... if this gets released early enough I'm thinking potential christmas present.

I saw this show on Bdwy and thought it was passable entertainment. Then I saw it again on tour as part of a subscription series here in Toronto with Douglas Sills and company. This was the revised version of the show. It was wonderful. Almost every thing I hadn't liked about the show was either gone or had been changed. The second act in particular was one show-stopping number after another. I hope this version is filmed. It deserves to be. As for the score, at least the tunes are hummable and the lyrics feature pristine and clever rhymes. I liked both Spring Awakening and Once, but...

I spoke with Mr. Sills last week and asked about the filming. He said he's not sure what happened because the company was all set to film it, but they have since cancelled the plans to film, unfortunately.
