Miraculously Fox didn't license this one to Twilight Time, they're releasing it themselves on blu-ray July 31, 2012

The film is also being released as part of a 7 blu-ray collection: FOREVER, MARILYN

The 7 films in the set are:

The Misfits - Some Like It Hot - There's No Business Like Show Business - River Of No Return - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - How To Marry A Millionaire - The Seven Year Itch.

Each film is also available individually.

I doubt they even exist by this point. I'm sure Fox has looked for the footage and if it were found would have made it available on one of the film's many releases. I don't think the film has ever really gone out of print and received a total of 3 releases on DVD alone.

Is there any particular reason why Bus Stop isn't a part of the collection?

Bus Stop is in horrible shape. It needs a massive (and no doubt very costly) restoration.

Perhaps they're saving it for a second set, or perhaps they're waiting to see how well the first set sells before they spend the time and money to restore it.

(Fox should be doing that anyway.)

Well, the previous DVD sucked ... so that means it's already been restored!

... which means, Fox is holding out on us now and will probably release it in a "volume two" set ... for more $$$.

It's like the THREE movies for "The Hobbit." Come on!

Why sell one when you can chop it up into pieces and get people to pay for it over and over again?

Well, I'm glad it looks so good!

I have the Marilyn Diamond Collection DVD sets from Fox (which were also broken up into two separate releases), and Bus Stop looks by far the worst. I just watched it again last month, in fact, and thought they had their work cut out for them with that one.

It just finished and that scene where Bo puts his jacket on Cherie to warm her from the cold and the way Marilyn just plays it...it got me teary eyed. Just beautifully played! Why she didn't receive at least an Oscar nomination for this is puzzling.

Reel Life: Marilyn Monroe, an hour long look back at Marilyn's life and career, will be airing on the Reelz Channel a few times in the next couple days (twice in the am on Tuesday and at 11 am on Wednesday). It features some great recent interviews with Mitzi Gaynor, George Chakiris, and Lawrence Schiller (the photographer who shot the nudes of her on the set of Something's Got to Give).

Walmart is selling the individual Blurays for 9.96 each, so if you aren't interested in the whole set (I wasn't), I was able to pick up the 3 films I wanted for a steal.

Sweet!

You know, I'm going to stop paying attention to the Home Theatre Forum's critiques of Blu-ray Discs. They've steered me wrong several times now, despite having some industry folk (aka restoration and telecine people) who "should" know what they're talking about.

They've been picking away at "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," which I think looks fantastic, and they've given raves to "Singin' in the Rain," which I think is a step down from the 2-disc (standard def) DVD.

My eyes and ears tell me all I need to know.

Best, check out www.dvdbeaver.com. Their reviews are usually spot-on. Also the Digitalbits, but you probably knew that.

Watching GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES I could spot some issues -- the image seemed a lot sharper in some scenes than in others. Now that's probably due to the original negatives or whatever they had to work with, but there's no denying, I think, that the "Isn't Anyone Here For Love" number doesn't look quite as jaw-droppingly sharp as "Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend" where I swear Marilyn Monroe was going to step out of my TV and into my living room.

The biggest problem with Marilyn's performance is one we probably wouldn't notice today. She was doing a full on imitation of Kim Stanley. If you've ever seen clips of Kim in Bus Stop, their voices are identical. I'm sure the actors branch took notice.

I'm sure Marilyn copied some aspects of Kim's performance (How could she resist? It's Kim effin Stanley!), but there are moments in the film ("I guess I've been treated worse in my life..") where it's very hard to imagine that she's not using her own backlog of experiences to fuel her performance, especially in regards to her childhood and the men who did her wrong.

I think Marilyn gives a wonderful performance in the movie ... but there's no denying she copied Kim's entire voice (not just her accent) for the role of Cherie.

She did it beautifully and "genuinely," and I'm sure most moviegoers had no idea what she was doing, which is why they feel she was "robbed" of an Oscar nomination.

And I'm sure most members of the Actors Branch of the Academy knew exactly what she was doing, which is why they didn't nominate her.

Nice that Don Murray thought of her performance that way because he nearly consumed everything and everyone, never mind the scenery, in his performance that almost took down the movie, imo.
