Thank you Ricky Martin for coming to Broadway and making me fly across country by myself for the first time in my life to see you.
You did not disapoint...I thought you were Brilliant. Your singing was wonderful and strong, your dancing was Great and your acting was fine.
I have never seen this show before so I can't compare.
Is there anyone here who thought he was Great?...All I read is how awful he was....BUT I SAW THE SHOW...anyone out there who is a Ricky Martin Fan, I say, Come to Broadway and watch Ricky shine!!!
I'm very glad you enjoyed him in it Kristie, sadly I caanot share your enthusiasm. I really wanted to enjoy his performance, and on paper, he seemed ideal for the role. I'm certainly no die-hard fan of Rick's, but I still remember his increble, lively, and energetic performance of La Copa de la Vida on the Grammys (10?) years ago...god that makes me feel old, but I digress.
I just felt that he can be a fireball entertainer, but unfortunately he wasnt able to muster that star presence (or much of a pressene at all, really) in this musical. Maybe with different material and a stronger director, he just might someday give an incredible performance in a musical.
But for now at least, as long as his fans are happy and buying full-priced seats, Ricky's producers will too be very very happy with the receipts.
As one can plainly see by some comments on this board, there is a lot of envy and spite directed at certain "interlopers" who dare to come to Broadway (and bring the crowds with them). Many people have enjoyed Ricky's performance, so don't let the negative nancies get you down.
i'll say this much for ricky: i was pleasantly surprised by his voice. and i did truly enjoy looking at him from the fourth row. a great choice for che? not from an acting standpoint. but he's raking in the dough, so i'm sure the producers are happy.
I'm very happy that you enjoyed yourself at Evita. It's such a beautiful production. But, and maybe it's just the 2AM talkin', I was kind of hoping that this would be a photo thread.
Why is it that criticism is labeled as ENVY and SPITE? Why can't it be that some just didn't care for his performance?
I thought the casting was brilliant when it was announced. I was thoroughly looking forward to seeing the ENTIRE cast. I walked out of the theater unimpressed.
Just because someone is talented, doesn't mean everything they touch will turn to gold, nor that everyone will feel the same way. That's the beauty of attempting art -- we all bring and take different things to it -- including opinions. You cannot believe that ANY performer is universally revered -- there are people that dislike Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Anne Hathaway or Sutton Foster. How does that make them wrong or bad people?
I have no problem with people that like things I don't -- why does it bother you when I dislike something you enjoyed?
The people here are passionate: they sing praises as unconditionally as they do condemn. THAT'S what theater and the arts are all about.
Like dramamama, I was also looking forward to RM and this production as a whole, and both were very lackluster. It's almost as if Martin and Grandage worked deliberately against Ricky's Ricky Martin-ness, for fear of it looking like he was playing himself. That's the only way I've been able to justify such a fireball performer limping through a role with fireball potential. I, for one, would have welcomed some more hip-swiveling charm and sexy charisma. As it stands, there are two gaping black holes at the center of this production, and I found myself watching the audience more than the show by Act 2.
I love Ricky but the first time I saw him in this I was underwhelmed. However the second and third times he had improved by leaps and bounds and IMO did a great job along with everyone else in this cast.
I'm not really looking for anyone to agree with me I am just sharing my opinion just like everyone else on this board.
