So I was reading a recent thread and I read about in ones and how they are being used less and less. Does anyone know any uses recently?

I remember Follies used one before Loveland. The old/young Sally, Buddy, Ben, and Phyllis where arguing before a light brown curtain. After the curtain rose the set for Loveland the other numbers was there.

Also, would when Elle was changing in the middle of the girls be considered this? All the girls were singing I'm front of her during Omigod You Guys!

Spamalot had numerous "in-one" scenes done in front of that huge castle/portal thing that was sort of a false proscenium.

In the original Kiss Me, Kate, did the mobsters sing "Brush Up..." in front of a curtain, like in the revival?

If I recall correctly, isn't "You and Me" in The Book of Mormon one? It is sung in front of the black background while the Uganda set is coming on.

It looked to me like it was being done in a spotlight in a blackout. I could not tell what the backdrop was, if it was black or if they were simply changing the stage behind them. If I remember right, I had THOUGHT he moved prett far upstage at one point but i could be wrong.

The opening of Spooky Mormon Hell Dream is also done in front of a curtain while the Hell set is brought in.

darquegk - I think it may start out that way, but then that black background comes in (it closes in around Cunningham who then has to run around backstage and come back out in front.

Can someone explain exactly what an "in one" is? I don't know that I've heard the term before. (and now I'm feeling stupid.)

Is it just performing downstage in front of a closed curtain so that something else can be set up behind it?

If that's the case, You and Me starts at the airport, then a divider comes in and they finish the number. (I forget the name of the curtain they use as it comes in from 3 sides.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The national tour of White Christmas had TONS of these. Curtain after curtain. They were all ugly too! The scenes in Chloe's bedroom in Wonderland were all performed upstage in front of the show drop which opened from three sides to fit the wall with the window. It was actually pretty cool how the room assembled.

dramamama, I, too, have never heard of an "in-one" before, I was just basing it off of information I got from the rest of the thread. So if anyone would care to actually fill us in on what an "in-one" is, I'd love to know.

The one that immediately springs to mind is Timeless to Me in Hairspray. Very traditional In-One duet.

"In One", "In Two", etc.: designation for entrances onto the stage. "One" is in front of the first leg. "Two is in front of the second leg, etc.

Exactly, bwayphreak. I read most about this when I was reading a book on set design. The idea is that you are performing in front of the very first curtain/leg (aka: as far downstage as possible) when you're "in one." "In two" would refer to being a bit more upstage, in front of the second curtain or leg. It is a way for a set change to happen behind a curtain while action is still taking place before it. They're not quite as used anymore as they have been using more contemporary techniques for set changes.
