WOW, Ghost is on an upswing. Maybe all those other musicals closing will help them. Evita really dropped with Ricky on vacation!

^ I forgot that Ricky was on vacation this week. I wondered why 'Evita' had such a big drop.

Ouch for "End of the Rainbow"...how much longer can they persevere? Reasonably good grosses for "Chicago." Good gosh...a $500,000+ drop for "Evita"? RC in Austin, Texas

This bodes well for any of Ricky's contract extension negotiations...

Ouch for Peter with Borle gone. I was there Friday night, the mezz was 1/2 empty. I'm assuming the orchestra was full, it seemed to be so.

The new Stache (sorry, I've forgotten his name) is charming, but not anywhere as over the top as Borle. Which made the scene chewing bit unfunny. I still found it to be utterly delightful. My kids (11 and 15) adored it.

I knew Evita would tank without Ricky. Elena's vacation next week is not helping advance sales, either.

In keeping with weekly tradition, what follows are random, disconnected thoughts about grosses:

The Evita producers should do whatever they can to never let Ricky leave. A closing notice is imminent as soon as his contract ends...kind of like How to Succeed/Radcliffe.

I'm a bit surprised a lack of Borle caused so much damage to Peter and the Starcatcher, I didn't realize so many people had gone for his last week. Hopefully those numbers pick up.

Audra's return understandably was necessary for Porgy and Bess.

Anything Goes had a dismal closing week (as did the Columnist, though that's less surprising,) I really would've thought more people would have been interested in going. It was a nice run nonetheless.

Can someone please tell me who is buying these tickets to Spider-Man? It must be those crazy Puerto Ricans who needed to find a home while Ricky was on vacation. In all seriousness, who is shelling out huge money for this?

The pattern of Nice Work's downward spiral has been confirmed. I highly doubt it makes it much past Labor Day.

I'm still shocked that END OF THE RAINBOW is still running. I love it, but I can't imagine they can go on much longer.

I wonder if it would've just been easier for the EVITA producers to have closed down the production during the days that Ricky Martin would be out like they did for Nick Jonas. This isn't what I would like to see happen or anything because I think the understudies deserve their chances, but financially I wonder if it would've been the easier thing to do.

I doubt Evita lost much money, if at all. If they did close down, all of the workers would still have to get paid so they would have been shelling out a lot more money than losing just 50,000 in the week.

How to Succeed did not close the show down for Nick Jonas. When Daniel was in it, Warner Bros. bought out the theater so he could attend the premiere of the Harry Potter movie.

I find it suprising that LION KING and WICKED both went down in attendance, but still got the 2 highest grosses this week. I think the attendance at WICKED at least partially went down because on Saturday night both Jackie Burns (Elphaba) and Richard H. Blake (Fiyero) were both out.

No one is buying tickets to WICKED based on the appearances of Jackie Burns and Richard H. Blake. That is just ridiculous. WICKED goes up and down in high numbers, but it doesn't reflect anything about the cast and who is out.

EVITA and PORGY are clearly reliant on their stars (though EVITA is a horrendous production). I just wonder if PORGY will inch up from there, as a few other shows close, or if they are stuck at that range.

And I have to agree with a lot of people about SPIDERMAN -- Even though I don't like the shows, I "get" the tourist theatrical attraction of PHANTOM and WICKED and LION KING. I will never understand why SPIDERMAN made as much last week as PORGY AND BESS, ANYTHING GOES, and EVITA combined. It is truly depressing.

^Lion King and Wicked have consistently insanely high numbers. No one cares about who is out in one performance of shows that have been running for years as the replacement cast often has no big names (as is the case for Wicked and The Lion King.) That had no impact on gross. Shows that had performances on July 4th had some difficulty selling them and that is the better explanation for why some shows saw a slight dip in grosses.

For future reference, Wicked and The Lion King consistently gross the most. Occasionally, Spider-Man or once or twice The Book of Mormon will sneak in there but the fact that they're on top is nothing to marvel at. It would be noteworthy if they didn't have the highest grosses.

You guys seem to forget what happened last week-the film The Amazing Spiderman opened to insane grosses-I'm sure that some of the show's success can be attributed to that.

I saw WICKED on Saturday night when they were out. I agree, Jackie and Richard aren't big names, but a few people around me seemed dissapointed by the fact that 2 of the leads were out. It really didn't bother me much, though. I loved the show nonetheless.

Those people always crack me up. Inevitably, if I'm at the Phantom of the Opera or a similar show and Christine or the Phantom is out, everyone will complain to whomever they're with, and I highly doubt 99% of them had ever heard of or knew about either actor.

It had nothing to do with the gross.

Are their names above the title? I'm guessing no. It would have no bearing on grosses.

How do you propose the MOVIE Spiderman had any effect on the MUSICAL'S attendance? I don't even understand that logic. It's not like it was sluggish and then miraculously perked up. Its doing well, because lots of people like Spiderman and lots of people like spectacle. It is not (for the most part) your typical b'way audience. It is much more likely to oonvince your 15 year old son to see Spiderman on b'way than Once (or what have you). Assuming, he's not a theater geek.

Though I was a bit upset about Jackie being gone because I heard she sings and acts the part very well. I saw Donna Vivino in her place. She was great as well. I don't know why they were out, because they were both at the matinee.

Yes. I was confused as well, because she was on tour. I didn't recall her being a curent Elphaba understudy. She wasn't in the playbill, but the stuffer slip said Donna Vivino.

As per her request, she would not be in the playbill, but her picture and bio would get a slip when she went on.
