Evita Questions

Hello to all. We are planning to go to NYC this Augast and have decided the only show we are going to get advanced tickets to to is Evita (we might get rush or tkts to something like spiderman, porgy and bess, newsies or something else)and I have a few questions. Is the mezzanine overhang bad if you are sitting in the back of the orchastra? I know you can't predict if somebody will be sick or not but has Ricky Martin been performing most shows because I defenetly want to see him. Lastly where is the stage door and how busy does it get. We are thinking about going on a Saturday night when Rickys not on vacation if that helps.

Yes, Ricky Martin has been performing most of his shows. The stage door is located on 45th across from the Shubert Alley, and it does get crazy.

I don't know about the overhang but the theatre is huge, so front of mezz better than real orchestra at the Marquis, in my opinion.

I have legit sat in every section of this particular theatre! Any where you sit is good bc the Mezz is sort of on the small side. I was in the very last row of the Mezz for Wonderland and the seats weren't bad at all. I sat stage right 10 rows back for Evita and the seats were just fine. Ricky comes out of the stage door at night but not for afternoon performances, but the stage door is really crazy so try to get an end seat and run out during curtain call in order to get a spot at the barricade!

I've heard that Martin only signs a few playbills then leaves. (no personal experience there).

But please do not leave during the curtain call. BroadwayBrandon that is actually very rude and disrespectful to the cast and crew of the show. Curtain call is part of the show, that's why they have them. If you're staying for the whole show stay for the curtain call. The only times it's okay to leave a show early are for emergencies or you're leaving because you didn't find the show worth your time. Leaving at curtain call is just a NO.

I was appalled at the audience behavior during the curtain call when I went a few weeks ago. People were running out [I assume to get a spot by the barricade] and there were flashes going off all over the theatre. Do the ushers just not care about that?

That being said, I had no interest in getting Martin's autograph, but we were waiting at the stage door for Michael Cerveris and Elena Roger (who pretty much ran out while Martin was signing), and Martin was VERY nice. He signed Playbills and even took pictures with people. Also the stage doorman really knew how to handle the situation, telling the crowd not to push and injure the people standing next to the barricades.

Christina isn't bad - she DOES have a very generic Broadway voice, so if you want the score sung predictably [but still as shrill and thin in the higher register as Elena] then go for Christina. If you can see them both, it'd be worth it.

Elena for me is a dynamo. She is fierce in this role. I don't think I could bring myself to see anyone other than her in this production....

This might be the best thing ever posted to these boards! At one point very rude to Actors, the next hate the show, just leave

Why doesn't Vikingstuff stage door for Ricky a different night to the one he/she sees the show? Then you can turn up at the stage door 10minutes before the end of the show and beat the rush and be near the front :) take your playbill along with you and you can get it signed then :)

Agree with this. If you can only see one, see Elena Roger. I find the production a bit stale and boring without her, and the generic 'yanky', Wicked-esque sound of DeCicco doesn't feel quite right when virtually everything else in the production has had the Latin/authentic element emphasised. Roger appears to be polarising in the role on Broadway, but she got unanimous raves in London and an Olivier nomination for her performance. Just don't expect the role to be acted or sung conventionally.

We left before curtain call was over because we were so disappointed in the show.

emlodik completely uncalled for! I detest glee and am far from a moron...she sings the score very well and missed not one note! I cannot say the same for Ms. Rodger...

I saw Elena already...HUGE mistake. Couldn't understand a word she was shreiking. Seeing Christina on Sat and cannot wait to be able to enjoy the show without wanting to rip my ears off.

I saw Jessica Lea Patty the first time she went on as Eva (6/27) - it was my second time seeing the show. Jessica was really amateurish, in my opinion, and exhibited none of the will and drive necessary to play Evita. Both her voice and acting were not at all to my taste - and my boyfriend was somewhat shocked that a performance of that low quality was put on stage. It was really disappointing. We went to the show for the third time last night and got to see Max von Essen play Che. It was a real treat and I am so glad I got to see him. I thought he was really fantastic (I greatly preferred his performance to Ricky Martin's) and Constantine Germanacos was on as Magaldi and was also extremely enjoyable. The production is amazing in the way they have developed the Juan/Eva relationship - and Michael Cerveris is brilliant as Peron. I really enjoyed Elena Roger as Evita (I saw her my 1st & 3rd time). She is such a little dynamo and firecracker and very convincing as the force of nature that any successful Eva must be. Yes, the accent is heavy at times and her voice is thin on a couple notes - but the performance and characterization more than make up for it. I would definitely recommend seeing Max Von Essen play Che (if you aren't a Ricky Martin fan) - I would suggest avoiding seeing Jessica Lea Patty.

^From what I hear about his performance, it wasn't worth seeing the whole show. People who left early probably didn't see it as worth their time to finish the show. If they left the show, they probably weren't Darren Criss fans and so the low caliber of his abilities.
