The article says that they hoped that people would start buying more tickets since it was closing, but that didn't happen so they have to close even earlier.
When searching for August 5th closing tickets yesterday, they were still in center row B. I mentioned then it would probably close early. I was holding out for a discount code for that day. Not sure if I can make the trip up on such short notice. Plus train tickets are more expensive with less than 2 weeks notice of travel.
Hallelujah! This waste of time has no place in a theatre named after Sondheim. Let's get some relevant, thoughtful work in this space. Is it so much to ask that one theatre be reserved for real art?
This is very disappointing to the whole cast to have the closing date move up. I feel bad for all of them. I wonder what will play at the theatre next.
With all these closing notices, it's like January 2009 all over again. Saying a show will probably close is one thing, but how can anyone hope for someone out of a Job?
I imagine The Sondheim will remain dark for a while, Roundabout haven't announced anything for it, if Drood is a hit, I could see it transferring to the Sondheim for a longer run or more likely they'll hire it out for a commercial production like they did with Dame Edna and Pee Wee Herman.
I am so glad I got the chance to see this last summer with Sutton Foster. One of my favorite theatre experience- sheer classic Broadway! It will be interesting to see what goes into the Sondheim next.
I bought a ticket after the August closing was announced and was glad to have seen Stephanie J. Block as Reno. The show was fun and something I would have thought would have appealed to tourists visiting this New York this summer.
With this date change and the Memphis announcement today on top of the other closings, I agree that it is starting to feel like January, 2009 redux.
I wonder if Roundabout will move an easy transfer in there for the time being... something that might do well as a limited engagement until they have something that's included in their season. It's such an odd theater, design-wise. It seems like they had a real opportunity there to build a really amazing theater and they totally blew it. Oh well.
