Looks like Rob Marshall's INTO THE WOODS Film Is Gonna Happen Sooner Rather

Found this bit of info on an article about delays on Rob Marshall's THIN MAN remake starring Johnny Depp. They mention Marshall has been doing work on the film, wonder who's he's considering for the casting, I'm cautiously excited about this:

I’ve heard that Marshall will likely move on and direct Into The Woods as his next film at Disney. Marshall has also been working on that film for some time...The original plan was to start production [on The Thin Man] in late November, but that will change as Marshall eyes Into the Woods next and The Thin Man after.

Well then.

Let's hope Johnny Depp also now being available doesn't result in a marriage of convenience, if you will.

I'm not the biggest Marshall fan, but thank God Burton isn't directing this, in which case we would probably get Depp as the Witch.

I wouldn't be surprised if they cast him as the Mysterious Man or a Wolf.
Theatre is not just some petty extracurricular activity I do in my spare time. It is my life, it is my passion, it is who I am. Nothing and no one can change that or take it away from me. All the world is MY stage.

Catherine Zeta-Jones should clearly be in the running for The Witch.
Catch that dirt.

True ljay889! I'd be satisfied with that. I realise there is a bit of a CZJ backlash but she is a 'name' Academy and Tony Award winning actress who has a history of working with Marshall and Sondheim...sounds fine to me.

I thought that The Thin Man was being postponed because Johnny Depp now has scheduling conflicts. If that is the case, I don't think we have to worry about that.

Catherine Zeta-Jones should clearly be in the running for The Witch.

She may want to stay away from film musicals after the less than enthusiastic response to Rock of Ages.

I don't know, I kind of have a sick feeling in my stomach that Nicole Kidman will be cast as the Witch and Steve Carrell as the Baker

CZJ would know her career is not peaking so I don't know why she wouldn't want to take a leading role in a Disney movie of an acclaimed Sondheim musical, whose work she has had success with before, with a director she has successfully worked with before. It seems like 'no-brainer' to me.

True, but her agent may not see it that way. He is the one passing the scripts and offers to her. The agent may see another risky musical that could flop like the last one. Rob's last screen musical also flopped, all the more reason the agent may talk her out of it. You don't want two genre flops in a row.

CZJ needs to be kept away from this....let's hope Marshall goes back to the more darker lyrics of the demo
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Since CZJ bowed out gracefully from "Nine" because Marshall wouldn't beef up the part (and after seeing the film, Claudia was actually reduced in size from the stage show, so I can't say I blame her), she may feel she owes him one, or vice-versa.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if she's the Witch. I think it's good casting, too.

How about Charlize Theron? She was arguably the best part of Snow White and the Huntsman and I read somewhere she can in fact sing. She's certainly pretty enough to pull off the transformation and doesn't mind getting ugly.

If she can sing it well enough, Charlize would be a great choice.

So would Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, etc.

So far, I don't think any of them could sing it as well as CZJ (at least on film). Plus the camera loves Jones. She would be a stunningly beautiful witch.

The only actress I would rather see than Jones will never get the part: Toni Collette.

They just don't think she's "box office" enough. But she's (arguably) a movie star, with a unique (often beautiful) look, and an incredible singing voice.

best, while I really loved Catherine Zeta-Jones in Night Music, her voice is not her strongest asset.

I do know Theron can sing-and I'm sure they'd lower the keys if necessary. I think she really would actually be terrific in the role.

That said, given Marshall's history with Jones, I bet she gets the role-and I'm fine with that.

I'd just rather less predictable casting.

Winslet would make a great Baker's Wife. Amy Adams would too, but her doing the maybe-Broadway run might mess that up.

My dream cast:

Witch: Charlize Theron (Catherine Zeta-Jones is fine, just prefer more out of the box casting)
-Another possibility-Anne Hathaway for either Witch or Baker's Wife-but I see her more in the Witch role
Baker: Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Baker's Wife: Kate Winslet
Cinderella: Emma Stone or Amanda Seyfried
Rapunzel: ?

Lea Michele as Little Red? (I'm not her biggest fan but I bet she'd be good.)
Jack...not so sure (I'm not as good with the male roles in this to be honest-it depends how young/old they cast these two. I really don't know.)

Put me on team Charlize, too. I wouldn't even mind if they did lower the keys for her, as long as she sounded decent singing them. I'm all for lowering or raising keys to fit each performer. Never seen a problem with it, but I'll never understand why they even bother to change the keys for stars in movie musicals when they still can't even sing in those keys. Like Nicole Kidman in Nine? Judging from what I heard in Moulin Rouge, wouldn't she have actually sounded better in the original key?

We'll see how Amy Adams is as the Baker's Wife on stage first before I'd stick her in the role on film, but I have the feeling she'll end up being terrific.

Emma Stone would be a wonderful Little Red. I'm almost positive she doesn't have the upper range for Cinderella (even though she'd act the hell out of it and be hilarious)

Oh, good. So I wonder in who's mind all the musical numbers will take place this time? The Witch? The Baker's Wife? Milky White?

I hope he finds a new concept....

And I know I will probably get skewered for this, but I know Marshall likes to use pop singers...who arguably end up being highlights of the piece (Queen Latifah, Fergie, Mya etc)...I think Lady Gaga would be a fantastic Witch. She def has the belt for Last Midnight, and would bring the starpower to appeal to a large demographic.
Yes that's me. No, it's not a Rent homage.

In a movie version of Into the Woods, would the narrator be seen? Standing in the forest talking to the camera? I know that they give him to the giant's mother, but they could cut that.

And if he is seen, will he double as Mysterious Man?
