Agreed. I was so nervous when I saw him in the THIRD preview. And I was even more nervous for him and his hair last night. His voice is going to be SHOT by the time they close next week.
Honestly? Yes. In addition to being wonderful in the show, he won the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle Awards. Frankly, I'm more surprised he wasn't considered the frontrunner after that.
I think LOTS of people thought he might get it. I know I haven't seen Nice Work yet, and I even guessed it would be McGrath -- coming from all the buzz.
I predicted him to win. He is wonderful in Nice Work. And I figured if they were already checking off Judy Kaye, why not vote for her comic counterpart? They play off each other tremendously well. Congrats!
Guess I'm in the minority. I thought he was fine, but didn't excel, or had the Tony "oomph" factor. And, for me, relied on a few too many Nathan Lane-isms for me. Wasn't my top choice of the nominees, but happy for him.
I was certainly hoping for it since I believe he gave the best performance out of those I saw in that category. His "nathanisms" comments are about as odd as "matthew broderick looks bored" on BWW. Michael is not doing anyone but himself. Talent doesn't have to copy anyone.
