Interesting article. Some of the most common offenders are included like Chick-Fil-A and Wal-Mart but I was surprised Urban Outfitters was included along with them.
Nice to know that JC Penney and Goldman Sachs among others have got our backs, though. ARTICLE HERE
The Internet, as we see on this board, lets people say whatever ridiculous things they want without consequence. Any article about gay rights is flooded with messages like those.
I work at a Fortune 100 company in the New York office. They've offered benefits to domestic partners for at least ten years. The EOE (Equal Opportunity Employer) statement in the handbook prohibits discrimination against sexual orientation along with sex, race, age and disability. I'm proud of that.
I actually found out about Urban Outfitters from a Twitter war Miley Cyrus declared on the company that included her mentioning that that the support political campaigns of noted homophobes. Actually, I think a few other people did from that too- which is kinda why I cut Miley slack since she used her fame for good.
Wal-Mart barely provides benefits to any of its employees...least of all domestic partners. Check out the documentary, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices.
My place of employment has actually begun to compensate their gay employees over their initial salary because of the government taxes domestic partnership health plans (which they don't for people who are married). I was very, very happy when that change was made.
Urban Outfitters is the only company I actively patronize on the list of anti-gay rights stores. I had no idea and I would venture a guess that most of its shoppers don't either as the store seems to hide behind a progressive facade.
I have to do some more reading but if the company actively uses money to campaign against gay rights, I'd have no problem boycotting it.
I didn't know about Urban Outfitters either and I've officially crossed it off my list. I've also refrained from reading comments made on news/entertainment articles because as Kad pointed out the internet lets people say whatever ridiculous things they want without consequence.
Reading many of the racist/homophobic comments really angered me to the point of it actually affecting me so now I just refrain from reading them.
