Newsies or Anything Goes?
Posted: 5/31/12 at 10:17am
I've got valuable insight from this forum before and hope to do so again

My husband and our boys (aged 14 and 11) are going to New York in July. We came last year and saw Rent (loved by me and 14yr old - enjoyed by hubby and 11yr old), How to Succeed (with Daniel Radcliffe) loved by hubby, 11yr old and me, enjoyed by 14yr old, and Priscilla (tolerated by the group of us - hubby and I liked the movie better; collectively we didn't like the 'make these existing songs fit the story' jukebox musical format, and lost interest in costume changes after a while).

This July, 14yr old and I are going to see Rent (14yr olds pick) again while hubby and 11yr old are at Potted Potter (11yr olds pick). We are going to see Once (my pick), Chicago (hubby pick). We want to add one more show...

I thought Anything Goes would be a good contrast in style to Chicago, but as of right now there aren't discounts for July (and I am not quite ready to pay full price). The other one we thought of was Newsies (which I could get discounted tickets for now in Right Orchestra M.

What is your opinion? Go for Newsies or wait for Anything Goes discounts - or consider something different?

thanks

Newsies, I'd say, but you can't really go wrong with either show!

"Anything Goes" is the best musical on Broadway, bar none. (And that includes "The Book of Mormon".) Beg, borrow or steal to see it.

sounds like the good news is that I can't go wrong thanks for the input so far...

Right now Anything Goes has discount codes through to July 1st and I am hoping to slot it into July 10th. Should I continue to play chicken with the discount codes or is there a chance that there will never be a discount, and I need to decide if I am willing to pay full price ?

I now also realize that technically we could see newsies on Monday then Anything goes on Tuesday when and if it goes on discount... hmmm.... I am going to review that option vs budget!

thanks for your help...

Anything Goes. Simply because it likely won't extend past September. Newsies will be around for a while.

If you join TDF.org for $30 a year (or less if you live outside of NYC), you can probably get TDF tickets for Anything Goes. It's been on there a lot lately. Those tickets are $41, but you can't choose your seat location.

Honestly if you have the money's would purchase the cheapest(in the Mezz for newsies) available because the Mezz in the Sondhiem is just as good as the orchestra, I sat in th rescind to last row for GOES and 3rd row orchestra for Birdie and I actually liked the 2ndd to last row of the Mezz better. For Newsies I have a friend in the cast and have seen it 3 times and me and my friend agree anywhere is the Mezz is a ton better than the orch for the show.

Why don't you do Shakespeare in the Park or something?

I say go wait in the park and see something good for free (provided there is something playing then-don't know when the transition between the two productions is exactly). You could expose the kids to something different and a new experience in attending a show outside. As You Like It is one of Shakespeare's easiest plays to follow-and one of the most fun. Based on your kids' tastes, I think they might be sophisticated enough to get it.

ANYTHING GOES. Take them to the side of the theatre in the alley afterwards, some of the cast signs a program or two after almost every show.

bdn223- you're right but at a lot of the shows, it seems the majority of the cast rushes by the waiting throngs, the Anything Goes cast seems to me to make more of an effort to sign programs. That's allQ

Newsies was wonderful! My 16 year old daughter and I saw show in April and are returning in June with friends to see it again. Rec'd new discount code for Newsies today from Telecharge and bought discounted tickets code - Tele

We saw matinee performance and many of the actors came out to sign after the show. We were surprised and very appreciative since there was another performance that evening.

Enjoy whichever show you choose!

I will join the choir of Anything Goes recommendations. Truly, a gorgeous production and Stephanie J. Block is a fabulous Reno.

My vote is for seeing both (using the monday evening option), using cheaper seats for newsies, since the theatre is small and mezz has good views. Both shows are great.

Thanks so much to everyone

We are actually big fans of mezzaninne - we sat first row mezzannine for both How to Succeed and Priscilla last year based on feedback from this forum that Broadway theatres were generally quite small (in a good way) and it was great advice. Especially with the younger kid I fear 'big hair' in front of him, and the front mezz was perfect. Side note though, we went and saw Les Miz in East Lansing Michigan a month or so ago and had front row mezz - but it was too far away (in a huge theatre hall). If I can't actually see their faces I can't get engaged. (Had the same experience just recently in Toronto where my mum took us all to the touring company of West Side Story - row Z so that we could get 6 together. Too far away...)

So... if given that the Newsies theatre is small... if we ended up with the furthest seat away in the mezz, would we still be able to see their faces (if that question makes sense?)

And I think I am almost convinced of doing both !

For Newsies the back row of the Mezz is about26 rows from the stage. I have not sat that far back during the performance i saw front Mezz. But when my friend and i were looking for seats in the second act(we had standing room) we went to the top sice thats where our friend in thecast told usto look/sit, we were amazed byhow you can actually see the entire stage and set which you most certaintly cant appreciate from the orchestra. Seeing their faces should not be a problem, maybe you won't see the slightest grimace, but realize that by sitting there you get to see the cheoreography (which is the main reason to see it) as a whole, unlike the orchestra which only sees the front dancers.

Anything Goes is awesome and a spectacular dynamic production. That cast is super fun and they're great about signing. I've only seen Sutton so not sure if Block signs, both Foster and Joel Grey didn't stage door.

We were row BB in center mezzanine and had great sight lines. I think row DD would offer similar views. Newsies has a tall tri level set that mezz seats are probably better than orchestra seats for seeing everything. We had full view but could also see actors facial expressions.

The ages of your kids seems to suggest that Newsies would be the better option.
