Nobody here probably watches American Idol after the whole "sounds too Broadway" debacle, but I was watching the finale, and Jennifer Holliday was there to sing her song with a finalist. I wish I had a link right now. Anyway, for those who watched, what did you guys think?
As always, she looked like she was going to eat the microphone.
At least she was eating the microphone differently this time. I got a good laugh. Anyway, this girl probably should have won, but that's a separate issue.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Amazing. But the most amazing point of all is that the contestant, a 16 year old girl totally held her own with Jennifer. What a powerhouse that girl is and she really should have won!
I was mortified by what I saw... but ^^^ props to Jessica for holding her own.
"TO LOVE ANOTHER PERSON IS TO SEE THE FACE OF GOD"- LES MISERABLES---
"THERE'S A SPECIAL KIND OF PEOPLE KNOWN AS SHOW PEOPLE... WE'RE BORN EVERY NIGHT AT HALF HOUR CALL!"--- CURTAINS
the only better would have been her teeth popping out then her wig falling off.....she is a FREAK....love her Jessica should have one..she really killed it and held her own next to someone who was making all those faces..I would have started to laugh...and Jennifers ending was so over the top crazy...like a drag show
She is incredible! She will always have the definitive version of this song to me because she's not afraid to give it her all. She doesn't care how she looks, she's invested in the message, and that's what makes it amazing.
Jessica definitely should've won. She was fantastic the whole night and the night before.
I'm sorry...but in which parallel universe did Bebe Chez 'hold her own' with Ms. Holliday?
What I saw was akin to those nature documentaries where a starving lioness takes down a limping baby antelope.
Holliday brought it all. The extensions...the crazy...and the pipes. I was stunned by how clear her voice sounded.
And then there was the little Latina budgee, chirping away next to her, thinking she had soul. Thinking she knew what the song was. Little Bebe Chez is not going? Where? To eigth period??
Son of RJ: What parallel universe do YOU live in? One that on its face has some pretty racist appearances, for one. "The little Latina budgee"? "Little Bebe Chez". If you applied those descriptions to other ethnic groups, i.e. that little back budgee, for example? And by the way, the word is budgie, YOU BUDGIE. (look it up, folks). Or "little boy ..." to a black male contestant.
But to say she was chirping? Really? REALLY????
Too funny in such a sad way.
CZJ at opening night party for A Little Night Music, Dec 13, 2009.
Oh lawsy. She calls herself Bebe Chez...it's her 'alter'. Kinda like Sasha Fierce is Beyonce's 'alter.' If you watched that show (and I shamefully did...all season long), you would know that.
I'd have had no problem calling Vonzelle of a prior season a 'little black budgie' Or Colton of this season 'little white gayboy Christian budgie.' If you have a problem with it, I don't have the energy to care.
I've yet to come across a definition of budgie that is offensive to anyone. It's a bird. Bebe Chez is bird like. Like Vonzelle and Colton. Sometimes she chirps. Sometimes she honks. Frankly, I like the pipes...but girl got the personality of a budgie.
But thanks for the spelling lesson! It's one to grow on.
