According to the Daily Mail, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio revealed that one of his company’s heroes will reveal that they are, in fact, gay. DiDio didn’t specify who or when, but Courtney Simmons of DC told ABC News, “One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June.
Btw, it turns out that Batwoman has been an out lesbian for years.
I know, right? I didn't know there was a Batwoman either.
I want it to be a male character. Wonder Woman and Batwoman are too easy. Too much subtext and outright explicit history with the two characters for years.
I only started to pay attention to Batwoman with the Greg Rucka graphic novel on her. Batwoman: Elegy is the name of it with some great artwork by J.H. Williams III who still does the illustrations for the character despite Rucka leaving DC. Rachel Maddow even gave an introduction to it.
One of the Green Lanterns? Flash? I mean when I think DC icons I think characters born out of the golden age to silver age. Plus both of those character universes need an energizer for sales where the Batman and Superman universes pay themselves.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess none. (When was that infamous issue where the Incredible Hulk--well Bruce--is almost raped in the YMCA showers--mid 70s?) I have such a strong suspicion it will be Wonder Woman, but as stated, that seems pretty unoriginal.
That's a pretty sturdy limb you're on, there, Eric. Yes--"none" is correct. So correct, in fact, that I would--sadly--have been thrilled by a Gay-Predators-Roaming-the-Y story line. At least it would have been an explicit acknowledgement that I was not the only one. ("One" = homo, not shower-cruising predator)
Addison, your comment makes a lot of sense--even as a kid in the 80s I admit I would gravitate towards movies or hows with any hint of a gay character, positive or not. And things were starting to change by then... I appreciate you clearing up what you meant by not the only one though :P
I've definitely heard Wally West batted around as a possibility.
On the other end of the article (Northstar getting married to his boyfriend over in Marvel-verse): I only wish that they could give Northstar a boyfriend (and soon-to-be-husband, now) who has some purpose of existence other than being Northstar's gay boyfriend to remind the world that Northstar is gay. There was a lot of great material with Northstar and Iceman several years' back, but they wouldn't pull the trigger on Iceman possibly swinging that way.
I'm hoping it's not Wally because I found his relationship with his wife very well-written & I liked them as a couple (at least in the book Flashpoint). And I know they're not "iconic" but I wouldn't be shocked if there was more to Blue Beetle & Booster Gold's relationship.
I'm kinda hoping it's not Wonder Woman because, as stated, it's too unoriginal. And if muddies her story IMO
Now, now, Borstalboy. It's hardly surprising that the culture at large is more comfortable with a hetero-normative paradigm. I know plenty of un-married women who feel that society tells them it's only 'acceptable' to be a woman if you are a wife and a Mommy.
Don't let the limited vision of limited people trick you into turning on your comrades (Forgive me for assuming you are gay. I just figure everybody is these days...).
I like how everyone at the ceremony has that frozen, non-committal half smile. And really, that's all I ask for. My marrying doesn't have to make you happy. You just have to smile and stay out of my way.
There are a few but prominent gay superheroes, especially in the alternative comics with the couple Midnighter and Apollo in Warren Ellis' The Authority who have been around for over a decade. Even in decades earlier there have always been subtext and correlations you could make between the 'otherness' among superheroes and homosexuality. But in DC Comics, Batwoman is the most prominent since she has her own title in the New 52 reboot. I am curious not just who is the character but who is writing for it because I have varied opinions on the writers selected for the reboot.
Knew it would be one of the Green Lanterns. A known, iconic brand with a large umbrella in the DC universe where it was *safe* enough to pick one of them since its universe is so vast. Figured it would not be Hal Jordan but I was rooting for the irreverent, hyper-masculine, anti-hero Guy Gardner to be the one. It actually would make some bit of sense.
