Came across this article about Steve Kazee, our very fetching 'Once' star. It is quite the interesting read; I had no idea Kazee and Megan Hilty dated for six years!
I was wondering if they were still together (was beginning to realize they weren't when he started on his quest to get Zooey Deschanel as his Tony date...)
Knowing very little about Mr. Kazee as a person, I found this article rather interesting. Were you aware of all details of his personal life already, curtain?
Last time I saw him, he was with her. So I guess not, but I don't find his personal life that interesting, unless one of them is hittin' it with a co-star, (a YOUNG FRAKENSTEIN / LEGALLY BLONDE situation)they are just another show-biz couple who broke up. If it's A STAR IS BORN kind of thang, that might be VERY interesting.
Well I guess they have to give the Tony to him now.
Seriously though, interesting interview. I knew Kazee's mothe died, but I didn't know Hilty broke up with him--I assumed they were "making it work" even though she was living in LA and he in New York. I don't get why he did this interview though. It's not your usual Broadway PR...or is it? Either way, I'm sorry his personal life is so rough right now. Those are enormous losses to have in the same year.
He seems (appropriately, circumstance-dictated) very sad and reflective. They say "loner" as if it's diagnostic of something in his personality; perhaps he's just needing to focus on his work and to grieve the loss of a parent and a romantic relationship. Being alone isn't the same as isolating. I was decidedly in the minority but always felt he was unfairly overlooked, or worse (much maligned by some), for his Starbuck in 110, which I much enjoyed in the theater, and continue to listen to on the wonderful recording. To me he and Audra were quite strong together, but it's an argument I ceased to have, as so many people were disappointed with his casting. He endured and now he's in a role entirely his own, and the consensus suggests perfection. Gotta love show biz.
LBB was at 'Peter and the Starcatcher' last week when I saw it. She was seriously convulsing during Borle's big scenes, laughing so hard and seemed so proud of him. I just thought they were really good friends (which I assume they still are); I had no idea they dated!
I liked this interview with Kazee. He seems like such a nice guy. I would guess that the sad personal details came out and given the success of Once, the NYT thought this would make a good story. I doubt he had anything to do with initiating it to help his Tony chances. Doesn't seem like that kind of guy.
The Times ran a similarly personal story on Audra McDonald recently. I thought perhaps they were just doing a series of profile stories on Tony nominees. I really liked both of the articles. Interesting to hear the back stories of people who have shared such wonderful performances on stage this year. He sounds like a nice grounded guy.
Aw, he seems like such a nice, sweet and smart guy. I might just have a new Broadway crush, tee hee. Anyway, I'm happy that he's having such professional success in the midst of such a hard year.
i thought it was very well written & respectful. i happened to catch once the day before steve's mom passed away, the cast gave a lovely tribute afterwards and we could really tell how much love they have for each other & for him. i'm so happy to see him in a successful show that means so much to him. he deserves much love, praise & continued success :)
