I'm not one to usually say, "The Tonys should open with something hip and fresh!" like certain bitchy NY Post columnists, BUT, really? NEWSIES could put on a far more satisfying opening. ONCE probably could too. I guess they're REALLY looking to bring in the geriatric crowd this year.
I'm with JV- why drag out the old songs to open the Tonys? Millions of viewers will tune out once they know that a 90 year old song is opening the show instead of a 6 year old song or a 20 year old song!
(I know- I just never want to miss a chance to be outraged.)
I actually think S'Wonderful would be a better choice than either of those selected but taken out of context of the story it probably wouldn't appear as sweet and wonderful as it is. There really isn't another number that Kelli & Matthew do that would be a good Tony telecast number. Most of the numbers are used as part of the storyline so if someone hasn't seen the show, it would lose something in translation. I'm glad Broderick is getting a number though because I think he deserves it.
They should keep Matthew Broderick off the stage. He not only was the only one uniformly panned in most reviews, he's the only one who didn't get any nominations to any awards. Not surprising since he's doing the same performance yet again. Why is this no talent hack still hired?
sorry to disagree but he was not universally panned in reviews. In fact, after the inital pre-opening reviews, there have many more positive reviews than negative. I feel Broderick's style suits this musical very well since it's mostly a comedy. Many others don't. Just a matter of opinion. The fact is that his presence in this show is what got the funding and audience there and it has been a big hit regardless of all naysayers early on. He will continue to get cast because of that. Sorry to disappoint you Marc. It's show biz..
In addition to being a first class assh*le, Broderick is AWFUL in this and in everything else he's ever done on stage since THE PRODUCERS. His "schtick" isn't funny or charming, never has been and never will be and the sooner he retires and lives off his wife's money the better the New York theater scene will be.
I saw him be really rude to a complete stranger at the stage door the other week and a friend of mine told me he was so egregiously rude to him the other night, that he does need to get slapped. HARD.
^ I guess Matthew and Kelli cracked each other up on stage the other night and my friend said to Broderick at the stage door "I loved when you two started laughing, it was hilarious" and Broderick rolled his eyes and said something like "Oh great, glad you like it when people mess up". I honest to God don't understand this man.
