Do we really need ANOTHER Into the Woods on Broadway...

Now, I am the first to bow down to the genius of Sondheim. That being said, I am pretty unexcited about the idea of Into the Woods back on Broadway. Now obviously nothing is confirmed but with the rumors flying around, I just wanted some other opinions It seems we just had a revival, let's not beat the show to death. Also, lets take a look at Sondheim's very long rep list...There are some shows that really need to be looked at again. I would love to see a Merrily back with the Encores edits. Also, what about an Assassins revival or Anyone Can Whistle...just questions going through my mind...

Your idea of an argument against a revival of a musical last produced on Broadway ten years ago is to suggest a revival of a musical last on Broadway eight years ago, in a production many consider to be definitive? Really?

More to the point, it's not really about what Broadway needs. It's about what the people with the money think has a chance at turning a profit, winning awards, etc. A Broadway revival of one of Sondheim's more popular shows, with a wider appeal than many of his other shows (like ASSASSINS or ANYONE CAN WHISTLE), especially if it stars a popular Oscar-nominated actress, seems like a lucrative investment.

Yes we do need another Into the Woods. We need to get Amy Adams her Tony...

YES, yes, yessssssss!

There will always be the need for a revival of Into The Woods.

My point was simply that the show has been revived already, I would just like to see something that hasn't been. I did however not realize that the production of Assassins was so recent. Somewhere in my brain it was earlier. It was just a thought.

I'm very excited to see Woods in the park, but jesus am I upset with the ridiculous casting of Amy Adams. Who can take that childish face seriously in this role??

Her role in "The Fighter", I took her serious in that.

If 'Gypsy', 'Les Miserables', and 'La Cage Aux Folles' can get revived in a short amount of time, why can't 'Into the Woods' be revived after a decade?

Yea, as the outdoor Central Park production is based on the very successful Regents Park outdoor, so the talent spotters from The Public Theater company obviously want to import it over.

Is the Delacrote Theater productions eligible to win a Tony Award?

no we don't. the last revival was horrid. the original production didn't make any money and people care less about sondheim now then they have ever before in my humble estimation.

No one..cares..about..sondheim..outside..theater...people.. hence why follies sold for 4 months then KAPUT!

So, then, massofmen, let's keep producing the mass-appeal stuff that you hate anyway, I guess.

Exactly, Kad. If people don't keep producing the mass-appeal stuff, what will we be able to complain about here on the great BWW? With all that fodder gone, this board will become a virtual Sahara. We MUST have SOMETHING to complain about. I think it's one of the laws of the hallowed message boards.

And, as everybody knows, no one, I mean NO ONE, outside of those pesky (elitist?) theatre people cares, likes, or just plain enjoys Sondheim. Not one of his shows. Not one of his songs. Ever. Everybody else just wants to listen to Ke$sa or Beiber or... god I don't know- someone tells me there's this thing called "One Direction." I'm still skeptical about its existence. Point is any shows/albums/songs that challenge the mind or spirit hold no value to ANYBODY outside the very few Sondheimites. For everybody else, bring out True Direction!! Or is it New Direction...no that's a Glee thing... Anyway, might point's been made.

massofmen, people want to see Sondheim, not necessarily all of it but they do. What you said is inaccurate and uninformed.

Besides, the Regent's Park production is very different from any take on the show that might have been seen on Broadway... I'm personally curious to see how people will respond to it.

If Broadway only produced what the academics and hard-core Golden Age enthusiasts wish to see, we probably wouldn't see any shows recoup and Broadway would truly turn into the corporate theme park people believe it to be now.

I'll take another Into the Woods over another Gypsy any day.

I guess Follies transferring to Broadway from the Kennedy Center for a limited run and going to Los Angeles with some of the original cast means nobody likes Sondheim.

To answer the question in the title of the thread, no, we don't need another revival of Into The Woods. However, if someone puts up the money to mount one with a two-time Tony winner as one lead and a three-time Oscar nominee as another lead, I will find my way to the theater to see it.

In other words, I can probably think of a couple of dozen shows I'd rather see revived before Into The Woods. However, that doesn't diminish my excitement over the prospects for this production.

The last revival was so unnecessary and awful that yes, in fact, we do need another revival of Into the Woods on Broadway.

I also would love to see a cast recording....

Nothing could ever wipe the horrid taste of that last revival out of my mouth but a good new production could certainly help.

And seriously OP, it's not like WOODS is PRIVATE LIVES or HAMLET. It's bee done ONCE since the original production.
