I was thinking today about those situations where creative teams have come together to try and replicate their success after they've achieved a critical and financial smash on Broadway.
Brooks and Stroman tried with "Young Frankenstein" and didn't even achieve a fraction of the success as the first time 'round.
O'Brien, Mitchell, Shaiman and Wittman tried with "Catch Me If You Can" with not nearly the same result.
But, for the life of me, I'm trying to think of a situation when it actually worked.
When has a team been able to make lightning strike twice?
Probably most famous would be Michael Bennett, Robin Wagner, Theoni V. Aldridge, and Tharon Musser. A Chorus Line (hit), Ballroom (flop), Dreamgirls (hit).
Sondheim and Lapine Not all the shows were financial successes, but many were critically lauded and won several awards: ex. Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Passion.
Also, Kander & Ebb and Harold Prince. Flora, the Red Menace (flop, but it won Liza Minnelli a Tony Award), Cabaret (hit), Zorba (mixed), Kiss of the Spiderwoman (not exactly a big hit but it won Best Musical).
I suppose this brings up another great collaboration: Kander & Ebb and Liza Minnelli.
