Musical "Law" references
Posted: 5/3/12 at 10:00pm
My dear friend who loves musicals is almost done with law school. My friends and I are trying to come up with funny musical law references for a gift and/or card. My brain is a bit fried for some reason and all I can think is Chicago, Legally Blond, and Hello Dolly. Just seeing what funny musical law references could inspire a gift...

Thanks!

It's a bit of a stretch, but maybe Oklahoma - the trial for murdering Judd.

Might be something to find in "A Little Night Music."

You should definitely check out "the country's in the very best of hands" from Lil Abner.

"The Treasury says the national debt is climbing to the sky
And govermnent expenditures have never been so high.
It makes a feller get a gleam of pride within his eye,
to see how our economy expands,
The country's in the very best of hands.

You ought to see the congress when it's drawing up a bill,
"Where as"'s and "to wit"'s are crowded in each codicil.
Such legal terminology would give your heart a thrill.
There's phrases there that no one understands.
The country's in the very best of hands.."

The Scotsboro Boys. Though I'm not sure how many references you could use as funny one-liners from that show for a celebratory card...

If it can be a made up law, Urinetown has some songs.

Seussical has a courtroom scene in its own way.

Ragtime has "Crime of the Century"

Going way back, you might find something in Gilbert & Sullivan's Trial by Jury.

Me and My Girl - has a song called 'Family Solicitor'
Lady In The Dark - has a circus/trial dream sequence
Of Thee I Sing - has supreme court judges with lyrics like "We have powers that are positively regal / Only we can take a law and make it legal!"
The Mikado - Kind of; that song about making the punishment fit the crime?
A bit more random... something out of Ally McBeal??
The Boys from Syracuse - I think 'He had twins' is a trial scene

Gee Officer Krupke is all about the legal system.... sort of
Perhaps something from Poor Thing to highlight Judge Turpin.
and Spelling Bee has (ducking) judges....

While I have nothing to add to the list, can I just tell you that you guys really amaze me? My brain just work like that -- I always draw a big 'goose egg' for questions like me.

Here's a cute one:

"Marie's Law" from Fiorello.

I wish they were still writing songs like this. And shows like Fiorello!

SEESAW has a song where Jerry (a lawyer) is trying to memorize the details of a complicated law by setting to a tap dance routine (with the assistance of Tommy Tune's choreographer character).

To add to what Jon posted, the number is called "Chapter 54, Number 1909" and the premise is that "Jerry" is cramming for the New York bar exam (something your friend may be doing soon) and Tommy Tune tells him he can memorize statutes better if he sets them to music. It's about as specific a lawyer song as you will find, although the lyric is an actual statute, I believe, so it isn't what you would call "clever" in and of itself.

There's also "Sue Me" from GUYS AND DOLLS, which is much better known.

Definitely the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this thread was Legally Blonde. That's the easiest one. And then yes of course there is Chicago too

Yeah, how did no one else think of Legally Blonde! Such a good show, especially the West End production.
