I knew that 'Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark' is not the best musical ever created, but Patrick Page gave an AMAZING performance. I really believed that this was going to be the year that he FINALLY got a Tony nomination. I've been a fan of his ever since he stole the show both times the national tours of 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Lion King' came to Dallas. He gave two BRILLIANT performances as Lumiere and Scar.
Maybe, you know, in the "business" that is Broadway he should have made a wiser "business" decision and chose to be in a better show.
Spider-Man is literally the butt of Broadway's elusive joke. Yes, they've made a little money last year, but look at the grosses and you'll see that their steam is running out. For a show that has played anywhere near full capacity AND with full price tickets maybe two weeks tops, something that this show needed to apparently do EVERY week for over FIVE YEARS, no ones even going to make a penny from this joke.
Patrick Page should have made a better business decisions. Alan Cumming jumped ship. He was smart.
Thinking that Patrick Page, while good in the show, would get a nomination and possibly win is like being dumbfounded when New Coke fails because you were in the magic taste tests groups that actually prefered it's taste over regular Coke and Pepsi. There WERE people who actually liked New Coke. Regardless, to discontinue a 100 year strong beloved soft drink with something labeled "NEW!" was one of the stupidest business decisions ever made. Even though people liked the new soda, the whole idea was so ludicrous and the product was avoided like the plague.
It's no different here. Why nominate Patrick Page for performing in the show that no one wants on Broadway? They got their deserved design nominations... Fine. But nominating and/or awarding a performer in something like this, something that people in the industry would love to see close, somehow validates the show. A Tony Award for best costumes of whatever validates just that. A Tony awarded to the person singing the bad songs and speaking the rediculous book validates the material on a level. Patrick Page getting a nomination or an award is fire in the furnace for ticket sales.
Yeah, we get it. The show's not very good, but he takes really horrible material and turns it into gold. He's brilliant in the show. Perfect voice. Perfect characterization. I think he was def. should have been nominated over some of those people.
I saw Patrick Page in Spider-Man and he was okay. Being good in a bad show doesn't mean it's one of the best performances of the season. Just perhaps the best in that particular show.
