Can't believe Leap of Faith nominated, but Raul Esparza not

How is this possible? Play was bad, he was the only good thing in it from what I saw.....

That logic does not equate a Tony nod. Raul is an acquired taste. His reviews were not good and the musical was trashed. It makes total sense he was overlooked.

If only he hadn't looked so fat in the show poster...

I can't believe Leap of Faith was nominated at all. Besides being a lousy show, couldn't the thinking that prevailed by nominating closed shows in the Best Play, Best Revival of a Play and Best Revival of a Musical categories been appplied here? Whatever their shortcomings, both Lysistra Jones and Bonnie and Clyde were far more worthy of a nomination -- neither would have won but Leap of Faith certainly wont either. What do they think they're proving?

If the musical was trashed, why was it nominated?

If you read what readers of the New York Times are commenting about LEAP OF FAITH follow the review of the show, and if you talk to people who saw the show, you'll see why.

Because the nominators are not the critics.
The votes for the fourth slot were probably divided between shows and LOF got one more vote than the others.

I still say if the musical was nominated, Raul should have been also since it seems to be the only reason the show is Tony-worthy... He is the only reason we wentt to go see it....

Ken, the show was nominated because it is based on a Steve Martin movie and people in Iowa will see it when it tours. The Tonys, just like the Oscars, are all about $$$$$$.

That's pretty much why it got the nod. Raul doesn't even factor in.

After seeing Raul in this show, I can believe that he was not nominated for a Tony. I'm just surprised that this show was nominated for best musical. That I find hard to believe.

Ghost, Bonnie & Clyde, and Spiderman: Turn off the Dark each got more nominations the Leap of Faith (which only got one -- Best Musical). The nominators must have really disliked the three former shows.

So looks like Swingin' on a Star was the last time for this to happen?

Hm. It's interesting. Basically it's saying Leap of Faith is a better show than the 4 not nominated. But...... Bonnie and Clyde got much better reviews. I just think it didn't run long enough for everyone to see it. Leap of Faith lucked out because it opened towards the end of the season.

I'm sort of agreeing with RippedMan. Spider-Man (in its current state) got way better reviews than Leap of Faith, but I'm guessing that it's reached the point where people are going to go see it whether it wins a Tony or not.

Here's what I think happened: Clearly, if it wasn't nominated for Best Musical, it would close immediately. There were enough voters with a conflict of interest in regards to either the show or people involved in the show, and they didn't want their friends to lose their shirts. Unfortunately, the nomination has given the show life for only another two months or so anyway.

I agree with the baritone. Check out the list of producers on this show and a trail will lead back to the Tony committee via several of the people involved. The category requires 4 nominees if available. The other choices were less connected and/or less palatable.

I thought Raul did much more with his role than Ron Raines in Follies. I thought some of the other cast members could have been nominated. I do think it is odd that it was nominated for best musical, though, without one other nomination.

Something is rotten in the State of Manhattan! L.O.F. as a best musical nominee does not make sense at all, with all the negative reviews. Inside job, perhaps? from RC in Austin, Texas

Would love to be a fly on that dressing room wall!

That Leap nomination was a big middle finger to Ghost and Spider Man.

I am sorry but Ghost is a FAR more creative musical and the material much stronger than Leap of Faith, same goes for Bonnie and Clyde.

Also this year is gonna be one dull telecast if its just the nominated shows performing.
