What are some musical theatre songs that sound like another musical theatre song, especially from a different composer? It's too easy to say "Love Never Dies" and "Our Kind of Love".

Every time I hear "There's a Small Hotel", the beginning of the chorus reminds me of "Why God Why?"

"It's too easy to say "Love Never Dies" and 'Our Kind of Love'."

Don't forget "The Heart is Slow to Learn."

I've always thought sections of "The Worst Pies in London" kinda sounded like "Tomorrow."

I know why nobody cares to take them
I should know
I make them
But good? No

Tomorrow, tomorrow
I love ya tomorrow

Oh, so many...

Let's do one Sondheim and one Lloyd-Webber.

"No One Is Alone" from "Into the Woods mimics "Candyman" from "Willy Wonka"

and

"Every Movie's a Circus" from "Sunset Boulevard" has music from "What A Waste" from "Wonderful Town".

I wonder how much of Lloyd Webber's music is genuinely original. It's bad enough how similar the POTO overture sounds to a Pink Floyd song.

There may be more examples, but the first lines are very similar

Mother cannot guide you..

with

Who can take a sunrise...

Now that's funny. "Every Movie's a Circus" is my go-to example of a soundalike song. The first time I heard "What a Waste" (after I'd heard "Every Movie...") I couldn't believe it. Lloyd-Webber's not too original.

I propose an experiment.

Take a 33 rpm lp of CAMELOT and play it at 78 rpm.

I hypothesize "Follow Me" will sound almost exactly like "Come Back to Me" from ON A CLEAR DAY as sung by The Chipmunks.

While the lyricist is the same (Lerner), the composers are different (Loewe and Lane).

The Worst Pies/Tomorrow thing was intentioonal. Anniei was the biggest hit on Broadway when he waas writing Sweeney Todd.

Now, compare these four note phrases:

"I Want it All" (BABY)
"It's Not Too Late" (ROMANCE ROMANCE)
"A Bit of Earth" (SECRET GARDEN)
"This is the Mo..." (JECKYL & HYDE)

Same composer but "The Wizard and I" and "Spark of Creation." "Spark of Creation" was written first but there are several sections in "Wizard and I" that are almost identical.

Jon, I can't hear it on "A Bit of Earth" - the other three, yeah, but I'm not sure that song works.
