Why are we not putting John Lithgow on the list for Tony noms. His performance was stunning in The Columnist and not only can I see a nom I can see a win. He was absolutely brilliant.
Who said we weren't? He's absolutely on my nomination list for Best Actor in a Play. I don't think he'll win, but I ABSOLUTELY think he'll be nominated. Here's my list:
James Corden, One Man, Two Guvnors *winner* Philip Seymour Hoffman, Death of a Salesman John Larroquette, Gore Vidal's The Best Man John Lithgow, The Columnist
The last spot will go to either Alan Rickman, Blair Underwood, Ben Daniels (depending on if they rule him leading), or Dick Latessa (if ruled leading).
My money is on Latessa getting the last spot if he's ruled leading, otherwise I'd go with Rickman.
Keach is above the title with the other 4 actors, I believe. (Sadoski and Light were specifically petitioned down to featured.) And he wasn't petitioned down, so I do believe he will be eligible in the Leading category. As a result, I think he misses out on a nomination.
Though he gets the final bow, James Earl Jones is definitely playing a featured role, and they'd be nuts to promote him as a lead. Larroquette is a strong contender for the leading actor Tony in a very strong year.
I don't see Keach winning this year, but his only chance for a nom would be as featured, which is where he belongs.
I COMPLETELY forgot to put Hugh Dancy on the list. I actually think he'll take the 5th spot.
James Corden, One Man, Two Guvnors *winner* Hugh Dancy, Venus in Fur Philip Seymour Hoffman, Death of a Salesman John Larroquette, Gore Vidal's The Best Man John Lithgow, The Columnist
I think bjh2114 is pretty spot on, imo. I think John Larroquette is the most vulnerable, and I'm not 100% convinced Corden has it sewn up. He didn't take the Olivier and has some strong competition from Lithgow, Dancy and Hoffman. It'll be interesting to see which way this category plays out.
James Corden, One Man, Two Guvnors Hugh Dancy, Venus in Fur Philip Seymour Hoffman, Death of a Salesman John Larroquette, Gore Vidal's The Best Man John Lithgow, The Columnist
I think people may be putting too much stock in the Olivier loss. You have to remember that James wasn't the favorite to take that award. Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller were heavily favored to take it, which they did. They basically both won for playing two roles. They received rave reviews (as did James), but they had the gimmick going for them. I think James has gotten the best reviews overall on this side of the pond.
Understand what you're saying, but I really think Lithgow's reviews will be very strong as well. It really is a masterwork of drama in the same way Corden is giving a showboat in comedy. Strong race.
